Just imagine the noose tightening around your neck. As it squeezes tighter, breathing becomes harder. Survival demands that you gulp in air. And you can’t, even when air is all around you. And what is worse, as your breath stops you know that the noose is there because you are being punished for a crime that somebody else committed.

Not a suspense thriller, this is the daily life of fixed deposit holding customer. Our only crime was to trust a young and fast emerging Bank. We trusted this Bank with our hard-earned savings in the hope that when the time came to fulfill our dreams, it would help. Whether it was a child’s education or marriage, or buying a house after retirement, or even leading our day-to-day lives. All was well till one day we were told that the Reserve Bank of India has put restrictions on withdrawals.

In the last one year, we have held vigils, candle marches, met leading politicians across the spectrum, approached courts, filed cases and yet there is no solution. Even as the defaulters live publicly in their lavish holiday homes traveling in their luxury vehicles, over 50 depositors have lost their lives - unable to bear the shock, unable to afford medical emergencies, standing under the hot sun in the hope that we will be able to get our money back.

Today everything is on hold as we are still unable to access our own money. In the course of the last year, we have been able to withdraw only a pittance - one thousand rupees to start with and slightly increasing amounts till we reached the limit of one lakh rupees. We are forced to beg and borrow to ensure our children’s education and marriage, healthcare for ourselves and our loved ones or to even simply remain alive.

The worst-hit are senior citizens who had trusted the Bank to keep their retirement money so that they could survive on the interest which is our only source of income. Income that is no longer there, for survival. which is becoming difficult as even after a year, there is no resolution to the issue.

We look forward to your kindheartedness to live our lives and to survive until we receive respite. We seek your help!
