    Skill Development For Disabled Youths

    from Mumbai, Maharashtra

Urmi Foundation focuses on working with neurologically disabled children. These disabilities range from Down’s Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy to Autism & ADHD which impacts personal, social as well as academic skills to the extent of aprox 70%. Urmi implements numerous projects working with children from low-income communities within Mumbai Suburban. However, we have found that inspite of improved cognitive skills and having attend a sound educational base, many youths with special abilities are unable to obtain dignify employment.
To address the issue, we have now initiated project Atmanirbhar which aims at development of skills, entrepreneurship along with avenues to generate self-employment. It would entail teaching core skills such as banking, finance, marketing & product designing. Our mission is to empower 300 specially abled youth in a manner which enables them to be self- employed by forming their self-help groups. We also plan to train them to manage their operations effectively to generate profits and salaries for themselves. Meet our superstar Pooja Kamble (age 22) who leads our “Unnati Bachat Gaat” (self-help group). She holds the post of secretary and is responsible for marketing, stock keeping and accounts management. Along with Pooja, there are many individuals such as these whoa retrained & employed in self-help groups with the help of Urmi Foundation. Seven of our special entrepreneurs have received the “I am a Warrior 2020 Award.”Over 200 special youth are engaged with us via Project Atmanirbhar & we are looking forward to many more joining us! Our aim is to cross the 300 marks of special youth engagement via Urmi and turn our dream of the “Atmanirbhar Entrepreneur” into a reality.
