For the longest time, I had only two dreams: to make my parents proud and to become a doctor. But a few years back, life as I knew it changed when I started struggling with my mental health.
I grew up in what I now recognize to be an abusive household. Four years back, after completing my MBBS, I separated myself physically and financially from my parents, as an act of self-preservation. Since then, I've been working as a medical officer or houseman in hospitals, worked in covid for over a year, while dealing with the repercussions of growing up and living with trauma, and learning to heal. It's been a struggle, mentally physically, emotionally, and financially.
For a long time, dreams were dead, and so was ambition. The only thing that survived was passion for medicine. As I got better, I tried studying again. I recently gave usmle step 1 exam, scored 244. I'd like to do my medical residency (ie post graduation) in Internal Medicine in the USA. That is a new dream, still being nurtured, and also a solution to get me out of my current circumstances.
I'm doing this fundraiser for myself, for a sum of Rs. 10,00,000. About 60 percent of it will go towards exam fees for usmle step 2 and step 3, and as tuition fees for two clinical rotations in the US. (Each exam costs about 900 USD ie ~67000 INR, each observership costs about 1500-2000 USD ie ~1-1.5 lac INR.) About 40 percent will be diverted towards application fees for residency programs, and towards travel and visa costs.
I'm focusing on creating a new life for myself, one that's based on integrity, kindness, healing and healthy emotional connection, with self and others. I would also like to be able to impact lives, help other people heal, and make some kind of a difference on the world at large. I'm hoping you can help me create that.
I'm really grateful to you for reading my story, and even more so if you can help make my story more than just this. Thank you.
