Electrify a village in Ladakh through the Global Himalayan Expedition

Hello there! Namaste! Did you know that while you are reading this through your electronic device, there are about a billion people in the world still living in darkness! And did you know that you have the power to empower these communities by giving electricity to say an entire village in Ladakh, in the Himalayas? :) Yes you can!

Through the Global Himalayan Expedition (GHE).

GHE is an innovative 'Impact Tourism' concept that provides global travelers a chance to travel to remote unexplored communities of the earth and provide infrastructure, that empowers these indigenous communities with future growth. It has also got featured in the World Economic Forum, Davos - 2018. You and I might be privileged enough to switch on the lights on entering our rooms, however there are communities that have never seen electricity throughout their lives.

Your contribution would enable me to be a part of this initiative and provide access to energy to more remote communities than today. I will be going to a village in Ladakh in the summer of 2019 with a group of impact travelers and the cost of the same will include your contribution to the solar panels, batteries and micro-grid material for electrifying the village. Normally, a grid size of 1.5kW - 2kW would power 20 households with 7-8 LEDs, a street light outside of each home and a DC LED TV.

This is not just all. The schools in these villages are also then upgraded to digital education centers making them informed and emerging communities of tomorrow. As they give up candles, this saves on CO2 emission that might be harmful to the entire family. Moreover, these villages are promoted as off beat destinations to attract rural tourism that would eventually lead to income generation for the families residing there.

Thus by making the village self sustaining, we take a step closer to 'prosumption' where you produce and consume your own power.

The cost of the expedition is divided into four components:- Cost of the Expedition Logistics; Cost of the microgrid (batteries, panels, wiring, bulbs etc.); GHE Operational Cost; and Govt. tax and I would need your support to be a part of this cause.

I would request you to reach out to everyone you can and help us together give access to energy where it matters.

Empowering communities and connecting them to the world.

Many thanks and wish you shine bright always,
Shashank

Hey everyone!

Mission successful! :D

It's been a week that we are back from Ladakh but it's impossible to pull ourselves out of the experience and the memories we created!

We were a group of 14 people from 6 countries along with the GHE team. It took us 4 days to reach the village from Leh. We went to the village of Tangtse off Anmo in the Zanskar valley, a small hamlet comprising about 20 houses and a monastery. We stayed along with the sweet and ever welcoming villagers in their homes itself. It took us 2 days to set up the DC solar microgrid with a combination of panels of 250W and 100W. We installed about 6-7 bulbs in each house along with a street light.

Finally, in the evening of Day 2 we had our enlightening moment at "Lights On!" :D

It was indeed a humbling and learning experience to immerse in "Life in Ladakh". It's rightful to say that true Ladakh begins where the road ends.

All of this, was only possible because of all your overwhelming support and wishes. Thank you! Thank you for empowering us so that we could do our bit in empowering those beautiful people.

I am attaching some pictures! There are going to be a couple of videos and articles coming soon of which I'll keep you posted. You can follow the Global Himalayan Expedition on Facebook or LinkedIn.

Once again, thank you very much for making this happen. You were with us in this. :)
