Let's Spread Smiles, this Joy of Giving!

In one of my Grade 5 groups, while facilitating a session on Empathy, Rashida(name changed) asked, “Bhaiya, could you just tell me what is the literal meaning of Empathy?”

I explained to her the meaning with an example. Next week, she came to the class with this beautiful poem-

(When I act with empathy, I feel very happy.
when I feel I am able to understand others, I feel very happy.
In the form of a monitor, I become a little strict friend to my friends.
When someone falls, I feel sad.
When our papers come, We feel happy.
When I lose something, I start crying.
to understand someone is not easy, but I still try.)

On this day, the poem became the syllabus for my class to unpack the concepts of empathy. Together as a team, we tried to understand in which line has the poet tried to show empathy and how does it look. Some of my students answered, "Bhaiya when she says that we should understand and respect each other, that's empathy"

At Apni Shala, we build Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) opportunities for children in municipal schools, low-budget private schools and other NGOs, primarily in M and L wards of Mumbai. Our vision is to build social and emotional competencies among individuals so they can constructively engage with society and have a harmonious co-existence. I facilitate to over 250+ students every week so that they reflect upon their emotions, channelize their thoughts and explore their competencies.I believe Social and Emotional Leaning gives a way to students to constructively engage in dealing with challenges of every day lives.

Our spaces are designed with art, drama, songs, games and community projects. To create a more wholesome and long-lasting impact, we also work with parents, guardians, teachers and other stakeholders through our awareness sessions and campaigns.

I shall be forever grateful to Apni Shala for providing me a platform where I can be a part of such meaningful conversations.

My aim of this campaign is to raise an amount of INR 26,000 to provide Year Long SEL to 10 of my students. Akash Gaikwad, who has joined Apni Shala as a fellow is supporting me in this campaign.
