Selva Rathnam, aged 43, is a Physiotherapist by profession and the sole breadwinner of the family. Her father lost the battle fighting cancer, and Selva lives with her old mother, who has disability herself.
In 2014 Selva was infected with Dengue, typhoid and Malaria. In 2016, she was diagnosed with autoimmune disorders. She was hospitalised every time when her symptoms flared up. She has already spent 22 lakhs for her treatment so far.
This autoimmune disorder, a rare condition has affected her lungs (Interstitial Lung Disease) significantly. Her lungs are almost fibrosed and she is on continuous supplementary oxygen. She is also now presenting with right ventricular hypertrophy and pulmonary hypertension, which are complications of this progressive disorder. If untreated, this may lead to early lung failure. Currently, she is managed with steroids. To prevent further fibrosis and damage to her lungs, the consultant has recommended at least two dose monoclonal (immunotherapy)injections, annually. This is quiet an expensive intervention, costing around 4.5 lakhs of Indian rupees.

செல்வரத்தினம் (43) இயன்முறை மருத்துவராக (Physiotherapist) பலவருடங்கள் பணியாற்றியவர். கேன்சரால் அவரது தந்தையை இழந்தபின், தனது அளவான ஒரே வருமானத்தோடு வயதுமுதிர்ந்த தாயுடன் வாழ்ந்துவந்தார்.
2014 ல் செல்வரத்தினம், டெங்கு, டைபாய்டு மற்றும் மலேரியா காய்ச்சல்களால் அடுத்தடுத்து பாதிக்கப்பட்டார். அதன் தொடர்ச்சியாக 2016 ல் ஒரு அரியவகை 'தன்னுடல் தாக்குநோயால்' (autoimmune disorder) பாதிக்கப்பட்டார். அதுமுதல் தொடர்ச்சியாக அடிக்கடி திடீர் அழல் எழுச்சி (flare -Up) ஏற்பட்டு மருத்துவமனையில் தங்கி சிகிச்சை பெற்று வருகிறார். இதுவரை தனது குடும்பத்தின் அனைத்து சேமிப்பையும், சுமார் 22 லட்சம் ரூபாய்களுக்கு மேல் தனது மருத்துவத்திற்காக செலவு செய்திருக்கிறார்.
இந்த அரியவகை தன்னுடல் தாக்குநோய் அவரது நுரையீரலை பாதித்து இடைநிலை நுரையீரல் நோய் அல்லது இன்டர்ஸ்டீடியல் நுரையீரல் நோயை (interstitial lung disease) ஏற்படுத்தியதால் அவரது பெரும்பாலான நுரையீரல் திசுக்கள் ஃபைப்ரோஸிஸ் எனப்படும் செயல்படாநிலையை அடைந்து விட்டன. தற்போது அவர் முழுநேரமும் ஆக்ஸிஜன் உதவியுடன் சுவாசித்து வருகிறார். மேலும், அவருக்கு நுரையீரல் மற்றும் இதயம் தொடர்பான பக்கவிளைவுகளின் அறிகுறிகளும் தென்பட துவங்கிவிட்டன. தொடர்ச்சியான சரியான சிகிச்சை அளிக்காது போனால் அவரது நுரையீரல் முற்றிலும் செயலிழக்கும் அபாயத்தை நெருங்கிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார். இதுவரை செல்வரத்தினத்திற்கு பல்வேறு சிகிச்சைகளை அளித்துவந்த மருத்துவர்கள் அவரது நுரையீரலுக்கு மென்மேலும் ஏற்படும் சேதத்தை தடுக்க மோனோக்லோனல் இன்ஜெக்ஷன் (immunotherapy) என்ற மருந்தை வருடத்திற்கு இருமுறை செலுத்தவேண்டுமென அறிவுறுத்தியிருக்கிறார்கள். இது மிகவும் விலை உயந்த சிகிச்சை முறை என்றும், அதற்கு ரூபாய் 4.5 லட்சத்திற்கு மேல் செலவாகும் எனவும் தெரிகிறது.
