A Stitch In Time: Helping Vulnerable Families Of Nizamuddin Basti

Our appeal
The Sehat Sahayta Samooh, a community women’s group from Basti Hazrat Nizamuddin, appeals for your generous support to provide dry ration kits including necessities to 600+ vulnerable families in the area for at least two months.

Objective
Providing food security and personal hygiene products to the neediest families of the area, to ensure their survival during this period when they are not able to access their livelihood opportunities.

100% of donations will be used to purchase rations, with the women members of Sehat Sahayta Samooh volunteering their time for community welfare. All contributors will be kept informed about usage of their donations. Phase 1 of distribution of  30 days rations to 600 families has already been completed with the assistance of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture which will continue to provide oversight and monitoring.

Background- Basti Hazrat Nizamuddin, the seat of pluralism!

Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti is the home to India’s pluralistic traditions and the shrine of the 13th century revered Sufi Saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya – visited by pilgrims of all faiths. This 700-year-old settlement is home to a community of over 10,000 people, over 70% of whom are engaged in unorganised sector and provide daily wage labour.

The wrath of Coronavirus
As we all know, the Tablighi Jamaat headquarters, also located in the Basti, has been in the coronavirus discussions lately. However, one month after the Tablighi Jamaat headquarters were vacated, nobody in the Basti has yet been tested positive. This is possibly on account that the Tablighi Jamaat have little interaction with Basti residents.
However, the Basti was treated as a hotspot and sealed by the Government of Delhi on April 9th, 2020. This is the second stage after lockdown, where residents could not access even for basic necessities. This is leading to enormous hardship for many families who are now struggling to make ends meet. With Sehat Sahayta Samooh volunteers having secured curfew passes, one round of emergency ration distribution has been carried out.
Most of the resident families did not have savings that could last them beyond a few days, and with very few earning options in sight - at least for the next two months.

About Sehat Sahaya Samooh, supported by Nizamuddin Urban Renewal Initiative
Sehat Sahayta Samooh (SSS), a community group with 51 members currently, was initiated under the community health program of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture’s, Nizamuddin Urban Renewal Initiative. The group was formed with an objective of creating and managing an emergency health fund - swasthya kosh  that provides small loans to members for medical emergencies.  Sehat Sahayta Samooh has helped several families last year and has had a 100% repayment rate so far.
Loan extended to one of the members for a medical emergency

The Nizamuddin Urban Renewal Initiative has been able to visibly change the quality of lives of people through its interventions in health, education, sanitation, livelihoods and reclaiming urban spaces.
The community team engaged in relief work during coronavirus

Some of you might have encountered these interventions through the food of Zaika-e-Nizamuddin (https://www.facebook.com/Zaika.e.Nizamuddin/), the notebooks or lamps of Insha-e-Noor (https://www.facebook.com/Insha.e.Noor/) or have gone on a heritage walk with the Sair-e-Nizamuddin (https://www.facebook.com/sairenizamuddin/). Sadly – all these groups are also presently unable to work.

Help the vulnerable survive this difficult time.
