Support Toilets for Children in Zapwadi SchoolZapwadi is a co-educational Marathi-medium school in Sinnar, Maharashtra. With a total strength of 255 students (135 girls and 120 boys) from kindergarten to class 4, it has the largest student population amongst all the other schools in Sinnar.
These children spend most of their day in the school and so the provision of a healthy sanitation environment is essential. However, the school lacks access to proper water and sanitation facilities.
There are effectively only 3 functional toilet seats (one for boys/male staff members and two for girls/female staff members) and a few damaged urinals for as many as 255 students. This leads to a long queue outside the toilet, and sometimes children need to resort to open defecation/ urination. It is even more challenging for the senior girls who, with the onset of puberty, have special sanitation requirements. Broken doors and a damaged roof do not provide them the privacy they need to manage their menstrual needs.
Our school needs to construct another toilet for girls and a new urinal block for boys with an overhead water storage facility. Other repair works like fixing doors, replacing broken toilet pans, installing taps and pipe fittings, and fixing the roof and tiles of the toilet blocks are also needed.
The goal is to raise 4 lakh rupees for construction, refurbishment and maintenance.
‘Let us help these young students of Zapwadi School emerge as the agents of behavior change and lead healthy and happy lives.’
