Support Saw John Aung Thong, home-stay owner affected by the lockdown.

My name is Saw John Aung Thong, and I live in the village of Webi, Mayabunder in the northern part of Middle Andaman. I belong to the Karen community that migrated to the island from present day Myanmar (Burma) in 1920s. My wife Naw Doris and I run a small traditional Karen home-stay (Koh Hee meaning ‘island home’),, where we live with our two children. Koh Hee is the first registered homestay in Mayabunder, and over the past four years we have hosted many guests who would like to get a village experience in the islands.

The tourism industry is one of the worst affected by the pandemic and subsequent lockdown. With the restrictions in travel across the world, there have been no visitors at Koh Hee since March 2020, severely affecting our overall income. The situation is more challenging because our elder son, Saw Shelep John suffers from Down’s Syndrome and Heart Congenital Disease and needs frequent hospital visits. His condition has recently deteriorated affecting his mobility and making him very dependent on us for movement. He has been admitted to the hospital several times in the past few months alone. There are very limited medical facilities in Mayabunder, making hospitals a high risk area for already immuno-compromised patients such as Shelep during the on-going pandemic. Hence, we need to make additional arrangements at home to ensure that his regular medical requirements like oxygen supply etc. are met as much as possible, reducing the need to visit the hospital frequently.

The funds raised will be used to purchase an oxygen concentrator, engage a long-term care-giver and address other medical and health related expenses incurred in the current circumstances

Dear All,

My family and I would like to thank all of you so much for all your love and generous support for my son in this difficult time.

Some of you may have visited my home-stay and interacted with my son Saw Shelep John (Potpae). You must’ve noticed how special he is to us. He is very social and very open to meet and interact with the visitors at the home-stay despite his limitations. Now his health has been deteriorating very often which keeps us busy in taking him to the hospital frequently. My whole family is busy taking care of him. We are trying our best to keep him comfortable as much as we can within our capacity but most of the time it goes beyond our capacity.

The amount donated will help us purchase an oxygen concentrator to keep him breathing comfortably at home, a pulse oximeter to monitor his oxygen levels and other home monitoring devices so we can avoid taking him to hospital unless absolutely necessary. The amount will also be used to take him to Port Blair for consultation with the Cardiologist whenever they are on a visit to Port Blair from mainland. Taking him to Port Blair is also challenging because of his immobility and constant need for oxygen. The amount will also be utilised to engage a long-term care-taker for him as he needs constant care and is unable to stand or walk without help.

By taking all these steps, we hope we will be able to continue running the home-stay and giving its visitors a village experience in our island and continue our traditional farming activities in our farm.

We have nothing to pay you back for your support, but our home is always open for you whenever you visit this side of the islands.

My sincerest acknowledgement and gratitude to ANET, as it is because of having worked at ANET that I have had the privilege to meet and know you all.

Lastly, I would like to specially thank those of you who I have never met or don’t know directly, but have kindly contributed to the cause.

Warm Regards,
John, Doris, Potpae and Elton
