I am raising funds for my nephew, Satyaki Pradhan, who has been suffering from Cystic Fibrosis from his childhood. Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease. It causes build-up of thick mucus and clogging of lungs.

The buildup is caused by an abnormal gene called CFTR (cystic fibrosis trans-membrane regulator). Changes cause mucus to become thickened and sticky. This first affects the small airways in the lungs and then slowly but inevitably affects pancreas, liver and intestines. This can lead to life-threatening problems, including infections, respiratory failure and malnutrition. Normal life span of a Cystic Fibrosis Patient is approximately 32 yrs.

Satyaki was an extra ordinary student all along. Even with such severe health, after HS exam, he got admission in BITS Pillani in Mechanical Engineering, but could not pursue his studies due to his broken health. Next year, he got admission in Jadavpur University in Mechanical Engineering.

After completion of his graduation in Engineering, he was appointed at Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, but unfortunately his appointment got cancelled in the medical test. Presently, he is working in PWC, Kolkata, but frequently he needs to be hospitalized due to the chronic & deadly disease. Satyaki has been suffering since long and now he survives on various medical supports.

Although, there is no cure for cystic fibrosis, but there are various treatments available that may help relieve symptoms and reduce the risk of complications. Doctors have suggested a lung transplantation, which involves removing a damaged lung and replacing it with a healthy one, usually from a deceased donor. The surgery may be necessary for cystic fibrosis patients when someone has severe breathing problems. In some cases, both lungs may need to be replaced. This can potentially lead to serious complications after surgery, including pneumonia.

Knowing all the uncertainties involved, Lung Transplantation is the only hope for Satyaki for getting a better life with longer live span. His treatment will cost in the range of Rs. 50 Lakhs to 100 Lakhs.

Satyaki is the main bread earner for his family. His father is a retired PSU employee and mother is a School Teacher. With this limited resource, it is very difficult for the family to bear the expenses of this treatment for a prolonged duration.

Doctor's Consultation Charges
