Mrs. Sabitri Sahu, wife of Mr. Ramesh Sahu is my neighbour. She is an economically backward housewife residing in Hatadihi, Odisha. She lives in a joint family of ten that includes four children and two older persons. Ramesh Sahu’s brother Parameshwar Sahu had to undergo two brain surgeries few years back and therefore, he is partially physically handicapped and unable to earn a proper livelihood. Ramesh is the sole breadwinner of the family. He doesn’t have a stable job and whatever he earns is just hand to mouth. In fact, they are so poor that Sabitri has to do part-time tailoring along with her household chores to make ends meet.
Since last month, a lump over her left breast has developed. She also complained of blood discharge from her nipples.  Initial tests including cytology and radio diagnosis suggest duct carcinoma of left breast and reactive hyperplacia of lymph node. All these signs indicate a possibility of cancer in her left breast. She was seeing doctors at S.C.B. Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. The doctors have advised for operation. After the operation, subsequent tests will confirm the type of cancer she has. In the meantime, she has moved to AIIMS Delhi for further treatment. After the operation she will undertake chemotherapy. Given her financial situation, all these treatments will be a heavy burden on her. All the funds raised here will be used for her treatment. She needs the funds soon so that her operation can start.
