    Santosh Behera

    from Bengaluru, Karnataka

One of my childhood friends Santosh Behera is struggling with Pituitary Macroadenoma. What that means in simple terms is, the affected person may lose eyesight, memory, extremely severe headaches, high blood pressure, heart disease, and a long list of other kinds of issues. He lives in my small town in Odisha called Bhawanipatna.

It all started the last year 2020 during summer. He had serious vomiting symptoms, for which he was given some pills. But with time it only grew and by the time it was October 2020, his condition was so bad that he was admitted into the district headquarter hospital in Bhawanipatna for few days. Later he was released from the hospital, but his behavior was changed after the release and it was not normal, as told by his younger brother Prem.

Prem took him to the nearby Government medical college, Koraput for further check-up. There the CT scan was done and it was found that he has a brain tumor. But in order to find the exact details about the tumor, he further had to take him to Vishakhapatnam. He took to him Seven Hills hospital in Visakhapatnam and a number of tests were done. Finally based on the report, a renowned neurosurgeon in Seven hills hospital Dr. P V Ramana confirmed that it's Pituitary Macroadenoma and it needs immediate surgery. This required approximately 5-6 lakhs for treatment alone.

It was a big amount and Prem decided to take a second opinion about it. Therefore he took Santosh to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar in the month of December 2020. AIIMS doctor went through the earlier reports and they also performed tests to confirm the same. Finally, it was decided to conduct surgery and it was done on the 21st of January 2021.

We all believe that AIIMS is a government hospital and it's free. But it's not right always. AIIMS has general and private wards. Due to COVID-19 most of the general beds are occupied and they are not safe. So he was admitted to the Private ward. And that costs 1200/- per day. But that's only the stay cost. There is a number of other costs associated like surgery cost, medicine costs and others...

The story doesn't end here. Doctors have told me that they will perform more tests in the coming days as there are symptoms of losing eyesight. So they will keep him in hospital for days and they have not confirmed the tenure. It might be weeks or months.

Santosh is a common person, who doesn't have medical insurance. He has a wife and a 3-year-old son. He used to work in a photo binding shop and his annual income was not even 50,000 per annum (In fact it's NIL since he is going through this phase). For him or his family, it's not easy to bear this cost for a long period of time.

I please you to come forward and help Santosh so that he can get back to his normalcy. His family is a poor family and they can't afford it anymore. Please save him and help his family.
