This is an appeal from the students of Prof Sandeep Chatterjee, who is a well-known Film Academic and a National Award-winning filmmaker. In 2019, he red-flagged certain malpractices in administration and academic functioning of a Government funded premier Film Institute in Pune. Since then, Prof Chatterjee has been subjected to various kinds of harassment – including a completely malafide disciplinary action by the management of the film school. He was suspended in 2020, amidst the pandemic and charged with various false and absurd offenses. Prof Chatterjee is the senior-most Professor and Head of the Department of Direction and Screenplay-writing at the same institute, who has been subjected to a suspension because of taking an anti-corruption position. For us, he has always been a teacher who has encouraged free thinking and has never shied away from calling a spade what it is.
Prof Chatterjee has challenged these actions in the court of law and has already incurred a large expense. Most litigations in India tend to be long and expensive, and the litigants end up financially drained. He has been fighting this injustice with limited resources over the past 6 months and currently needs financial help from friends, well-wishers, and fellow academics, to carry out his fight in the High Court against an unjust management, who, through their various actions, have undermined a famous institution.
He needs at least an amount of Rs. 2 lakh now, to seek justice in the Higher Courts. In case there is a surplus amount that is not utilized from the cumulative donations, the same will be donated to a charity working with social causes or victims of COVID-19 in India and the donors will be notified about it.
