My husband, Dr. Sanath Kumar an anaesthetist and intensivist, was working in Prakriya hospital treating patients in ICU. He has tirelessly worked treating Covid patients since the beginning of the pandemic.
Unfortunately, he tested positive for Covid on 8th May and was admitted to Prakriya hospital. The disease progressed to severe stage causing acute lung damage needing mechanical ventilation. As he showed no further improvement, he was moved to Aster CMI hospital and put on ECMO and national transplant list. On day 25 of ECMO(June 21st), luckily he found a donor match and underwent bilateral lung transplant surgery successfully and was weaned off ECMO.
He is gradually recovering from surgery, but due to muscle loss caused by long term sedation and immobilisation in ICU, he still needs ventilator to assist him with breathing. He is currently undergoing physiotherapy for neuromuscular rehabilitation.
The medical costs have been extremely high and continues to grow as he requires specialist care round the clock, putting immense pressure on the family.
Any contributions made will go towards his treatment and post-transplant recovery.
Thank you for your help!
