    Samriddhi

    from Kolkata, West Bengal

I am Samriddhi, a girl who has always dreamt of experiencing the beauty of India, through travel. But I am a girl of limited means. My family is under tremendous financial pressure, and has little to spare. The last thing I want to do is, to burden them with this dream of mine - of a solo travel of 1 month in the hills.

Hence, I am here to reach out to my loving friends and community.

I know that this may not seem like a noble cause to you. I understand and that is why I have made all efforts first to find a suitable place to travel to, that fits my tight budget.

But as you may know, safer places to stay and travel - come with a price. Travelling with safety and ease is a major challenge - especially for women such as myself, who have small pockets and little financial support.

Through this campaign I hope to encourage AFFORDABLE AND SAFE TRAVEL for women in India.

But you may ask why? To understand my reasons you will have to take a glimpse at my story that goes as follows. I had the good fortune to study at the Young India Fellowship program, Ashoka University, with a 100% need based scholarship. At the fellowship, I was blessed with the opportunity to work on "Gender Based Violence and Discrimination" against rural women of Haryana. I have always been passionate about working towards women's issues and the fellowship granted me a first hand opportunity to both closely understand Feminism and work in the area of GBD/V. This has further fueled my will to work towards improving the lives of women in India and elsewhere.

Having graduated from the fellowship, it is challenging to remain in the field, first hand, at all times. However, it is important to continue contributing in any and all ways possible. Therefore, a scholarship at the YLAC fellowship, further allowed me to work on a project that aimed at integrating gender responsiveness into the design of our cities. Through this project, I grew closer to the issues of safety that women are constantly faced with, even in urban setups. Moreover, most women in urban India, hold the least, in terms of wealth. The female population of our cities is both poor and unsafe, let alone those of rural India.

Through this exposure that I have garnered, my ability to contribute remains limited to my personal experiences, at the moment. Therefore, the desire to interweave my journey with the higher purpose of making women's lives safer and easier, in any way possible, is strong.

As I undertake my first journey as a female solo traveler, I operate with the higher vision of sending a strong message out to the community - to work towards and ensure safe and affordable travel for female solo travelers in India. Yes, this is a long term vision and mine is only the first baby step. The change will reflect in the long run, but I must and we must start now - and spread the word.

With a partial amount already saved for this vision, I am requesting you for the given amount that I am falling short of, which you can help me with. This will help me afford a decent stay for the month and also manage the food.

If you appreciate the thought or just want to help a friend, please contribute any little amount that you can spare. I do not know of any other friends and family who have attempted this before. Many of them are skeptical of my attempt.

I want to mention here that any excess amount gathered will be given to my dear friends at Bethany Society. They are running a wonderful organization to support children and persons with disability. I will be honored to support their cause through this campaign.

*Please note that Bethany Society is in no way involved in organizing/fueling this fundraiser.
*This is my personal attempt and with your support, I also hope to share the gathered amount with them.
