Story

Hello, My name is Samik Chakraborty, and I am a 21-year-old queer gay person from a small town called Siliguri, Darjeeling District, West Bengal. Nobody in my family has a Masters degree. I have been accepted to study for my master's in the MA English Programme of Ashoka University batch of 2023. But, even after getting a 75% scholarship, I will not be able to pay my fees for this program. My mother, who is the sole earning member of the family, is a Primary School Teacher. She is 58 years old and will retire in 2 years. My father is a 64-year-old senior citizen with no income.

FEES AND EXPENSES:
The total cost for the 2-year program is Rs.597,000 even after my scholarship. It is not possible for me to take a loan of Rs. 6 lakhs at the moment and both my parents suffer from chronic illnesses and they also have high medical expenses that have to be met due to their old age.
In such a situation this fundraiser is my only hope so my dream of studying this course can come true.

I cannot take a loan right now because my parents have already taken a loan  and I would have to discontinue my studies to pay back the loan. I have always been a bright student and always have had a rank in my class in both the school and college level. Doing this will adversely affect me both personally and professionally.

I am a Queer person from Siliguri, a small town in West Bengal. I have always been talked to as if I am not supposed to have any dreams, let alone be queer. Even after facing tremendous bullying at school in Siliguri for being “effeminate” and “not being man enough” by my own family and from people outside, I have dreamt for a better life and became the school topper in my class 12 board examinations to then go and pursue my undergraduate studies at the Sri Venkateswara College, the University of Delhi which had already exhausted the meagre funds that my mother had saved throughout her work as a Primary School Teacher.

MOTIVATION AND PURPOSE:
In the future, I want to pursue research and do a Ph.D. More specifically, I want to work on Queer Studies and Ashoka University’s Centre for Studies in Gender and Sexuality can provide me with the theoretical know-how to do so. Through my work, I want to advocate for an equal and just society regardless of gender, sexuality, race, and other markers that are used to create divisions between us. I want to further the advocacy in queer rights and increase queer participation in academic spaces and also in the mainstream. I have been representing the queer cause in every space I was a part of in college and I want to continue to do so in the future as well.

Nearly all of my academic writings, paper presentations, and research are on Queer Studies and Queer Politics. I was also allotted panels in International Conferences like NeMLA andSWPACA but due to financial constraints, I was unable to pay my registration fee for them and was therefore denied participation. My abstract was nevertheless published in the SWPACA book of abstracts. I have presented my research in nine National Conferences(where they do not charge for registration) including those in Jadavpur University, University of Delhi, and North Bengal University on Queer Studies and Gender.

I have been one of the best performing students in my class and also stood second in the Intellectual Property Rights Course in my college. This fundraiser will help me give back to many young people who are queer and from small towns who dream to get a quality education. I want to change the thought that the future of young people from marginalized identities in forgotten towns and villages is somehow lesser than the others.

Please help me pursue my dream to study at Ashoka. I was selected by Ashoka University for my undergraduate studies as well but because my parents were unable to pay even for my living costs, I was debarred from attending the course. Now, when I have been given a second opportunity, a second chance to actualize my dream, economic inequality is becoming a barrier and stopping me from doing so. I have been selected in a class of 19 students selected from thousands of applications for the MA program and so I appeal to you to help me study at Ashoka.

I am a queer man and I have faced a lot of ridicule and bullying throughout my life- indoors and outdoors, in school and in college. People have belittled, harassed, and made a joke out of me throughout. I want to become successful in life and I believe that this degree will give me a good start in doing so. I need this help so I step out of my conservative space and be successful in life. This opportunity will enable me to empower queer students from small towns, marginalized students from neglected spaces to pursue higher education in the future and I will work relentlessly for this cause.

So today, I reach out to you because I have run out of options to pay for this opportunity.
Any contribution will help, and I sincerely thank you if you can spread this campaign, move it through your networks or help in any other way. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at csamik2014@gmail.com, as I would like to be as transparent as possible with this campaign and its funding request!
