My uncle Saleem (53) was admitted to a private hospital in Palakkad, Kerala on 24 May, 2021 due to internal bleeding. Endoscopy and colonoscopy were done and a small hole in the small intestine and a broken nerve were identified as the cause. An immediate surgery was suggested by the doctors to stop the bleeding. Following their advice, he was shifted to Lissie Hospital (another private hospital) in Ernakulam; where he has been in ICU for four days now and requires 2 units of blood each day. Excluding other expenses, the charges for the ICU alone is Rs. 30,000 per day. A total of Rs. 1,85,000 has been spent by the family at the two hospitals. The surgery, expected to happen in one week, would require another 10 lakh rupees.

Uncle Saleem runs stationery store and takes care of his ailing parents. He previously had to undergo a major surgery in 2012 and the family is yet to recover from the financial burden of the same. The ongoing pandemic too puts him in a tight position and the family has no way to afford his surgery and the growing health expenses.
