"I'm going to be a doctor and help a lot of people in my community"

Sakera Khan, a BSc graduate, is one of VIDYA Mumbai's best teachers. Despite the time and toil of supporting her parents and six younger siblings, and on of top of studying, learning drawing, and competing in Mixed Martial Arts, her work at VIDYA is exemplary. She quickly became our center manager, which is the highest designation at our centers.

She wants to apply the same determination, intelligence and compassion to saving lives as a surgeon and leading change in her own community. She has an offer from VNM University in Ukraine, which she needs to fulfill by the end of August. She doesn't have the funds.

You can help sponsor this amazing woman!

She says:

"I belong to a lower middle class family of seven children, and though my father works, it is contract labour, so he finds it difficult to support us. I have been working at VIDYA and I use my income to support everyone, including my siblings' education. I use my limited free time to pursue my passions, better myself and explore my interests. On top of the time I set aside for studying, I have been learning drawing, and martial arts, and I was recently able to compete in a national tournament for boxing/MMA and I came second!

I started out in VIDYA Mumbai as a part-time teacher. But they appreciated my work, dedication and integrity, so in no time they promoted me to center manager.

My dream is to become a doctor. I'm excited to have an offer from VNM University in Ukraine, but I don't currently have the funds for it. I hope to find someone who can sponsor me soon, as I have to get back to them by the end of August 2019.

There is so much I can do for my community's health and welfare as a doctor. So, after completing my degree I plan to return home. I want to not just have my own health center, but also conduct free checkups, seminars and facilitate treatments the best I can. And as a woman doctor.. I think it will inspire many other girls to aspire for themselves! There is still a certain mindset against girls aspiring for academics and career and I want to take the lead changing it however I can.

.. and I hope to earn enough that I can fully sponsor another VIDYA student just like me in the future!"
