The situation that started last year with the onset of lockdown has completed its year-long circle and has been confronting us with even greater force. Last year the students of our indigenous Chakma community partook in the physical form of education but only for four months of the year. The rest of the year they were devoid of education because of the Lack of Digital Infrastructure in the village.
Even with the above challenges. Our students showed exemplary passing results in 2020-21 Board result securing 65% compared to 30% in 2019-20.
11 of our students' secured first division out of which Boshni Devi Chakma the first girl rank holder and Risha Chakma the second girl rank holder are struggling to get admitted for higher secondary education because of financial inability.
Students after passing Grade 10th have to move to towns and cities like Aizawl and Lunglie for their Higher Secondary Education. Our MBRS school provides education till Grade 10th which compels the students to move out of their village in search of higher secondary education.
Moving means accommodation, food, clothing, school fees, etc which creates a lot of burden on the students like Boshni Devi whose family primary occupation is Jhum Cultivation and earns 35,000rs to 45,000rs on a yearly basis. But this yearly income has taken a great hit because of the pandemic and has eaten their savings within the last 20 months.
The future is grim for students like Boshni Devi Chakma and Risha Chakma. They are very dedicated towards their studies and want to continue education in the science stream aiming to become a nurse for their Chakma community. However, without getting any support for their education, there's a high chance that they might drop out of the education system and end up working as daily laborers or getting married at the age of 16-18.
The cost to support two girls for one month is 10,000 INR which includes accommodation, food, school fees. Making the total cost of 240000 INR for two years(11th & 12th) for Boshni and Risha.
Hence, here I am as a Principal, teacher, friend, guardian, and believer in Girl's Education. I am imploring for your support to empower our girls with the tools of education which they desperately need and want. This will set an example for other girls in the community to continue their education and not give in on the societal pressure of getting married young. This will help Boshni and Risha to pursue their dream of getting educated and help the Chakma community with their knowledge and learning.
Please extend your support for the students who are likely to remain invisible for the rest of their lives if not supported now. If you would like to sponsor our girls till their graduation then that would be greatly appreciated.
Ps: I am attaching their board exam result for your reference. If you need more information please contact me without any hesitation. I will also be sending the impact reports to donors periodically without any lapse.
