EMPOWERMENT OF RURAL POOR THROUGH LIVELIHOOD PROMOTION IN POST-COVID SITUATION

My name is Sasanka Sekhar Mohanty, I am a social worker, I am here to raise funds for Malkangiri district rural people to support their families and helping them to grow their handmade products.

OUR PLAN:
This pandemic has almost devastated the lives and livelihood of the poor tribal population in the area at large. Last year the standing crops were rotten in their field. With frequent lockdown and shutdowns, people were remained confined in their houses and local markets remained closed. Since last one and half years were a nightmare for the people which was never witnessed by them in their lifetime. The livelihoods have completely destroyed.
Taking the ground situation what we see malnutrition is a major challenge for the people in general and pregnant women and children in particular and this pandemic has aggravated the situation as people have no earning and government support is not adequate. The doctors say people should boost their immunity to fight viruses. But how they can get nutrition? This is the big question. In this challenging situation we should provide nutritious food stuffs for time being and ensure child health. Along with this we can motivate them through training to regain their strength at least to cultivate vegetable, Paddy, Ragi, Maize for their family members need till reinstatement of normalcy.

Project Concept-
The project envisages enhancing the livelihood of rural poor in Kalimela block of Malkangiri district. It aims at suitable interventions for both marginal farmers and landless families. It is proposed to have land and water management and its efficient use to not only improve the productivity of crops to ensure round the year food sufficiency but also generate marketable surplus. This can be achieved without any mechanical power and cost of irrigation would remain low. The paddy cultivation in the medium and upland that regularly face dry spell can be saved. Better practices of organic agriculture based livelihood can be taken up. Other crops like maize and
improved millet cultivation can be promoted to ensure round the year food sufficiency and generate marketable surplus. The families can also be motivated to take up vegetable cultivation during Rabi season by using the irrigation facility. Apart from this, water-harvesting structures can be created in Medium and Upland to save paddy during dry spell, take up kharif season vegetable using vermin compost. Through intervening in Natural resource Management, the families can have additional income of Rs. 20,000/- per annum.

About My Self-
As I have done post graduation in Rural Development and acquired thirteen years rich working experience in various livelihood, health and education projects in odisha so I am confident to contribute a positive role in such fields. I am not only very much interested in positive transformation of the society but also I have commitment to do so. The first and foremost duty of an activist is to identify himself/herself with the community so that he/she can be accepted by the community. Once the activist is accepted by the community then a scope arises there to know about themselves and their surrounding, then to understand and realize the issues confronted by that particular community. Then assimilation of data can be possible which can be analyzed in a scientific approach to chalk out the plans. Then skill of proper liaisoning with the stake holders to galvanize the project successfully is only possible.
Odisha has a vast manpower resource. Unless this manpower is provided proper education and skill training they cannot participate in the development process. An integrated development approach to the community in terms of health, sanitation, education, livelihood are required. In this process every members of the community will be aware of their entitlements and rights. They can also be able to generate their livelihood and earn for their family. Once the mindset of the people is changed then a conducive atmosphere will bound to be prevailed towards the growth of the society as a whole.
