Life as we know is a package deal of many complications, barriers, challenges, learning curve and survival. We become more aware of this system when we are thrown into the rat race of life during adolescence and somehow become responsible for our own mental and social growth. These learning years of young and adolescence play a pivotal role in shaping our life. In today’s day and age we have many tools to aid us during that period such as technology, one-on-one interaction, counselors and so on. However, the life in the lesser developed areas of India live a slow paced life and their youth are left behind in this race. Rang Karwan as an organization is working towards bringing about a shift in the paradigm in the lives of people with little to minimum tools by building opportunities to engage their artistic side in a collaborative and interactive space by forming communities that will encourage them to build and share the process of knowledge and exploration. At present we are working in the secluded mountain region of Champawat in Uttarakhand. We are working remotely in developing a community through community learning centers by providing safe spaces, conducting workshops, having pedagogy sessions assisting in their journey of self-awareness and self-exploration.
Rang Karwan has initiated various projects under PRANGAN to help facilitate the vision of the organization. Prangan is an initiative to engage the community in a democratic learning space that revolves around a holistic development of an individual through art and theatre-based pedagogy. We are aiming to engage with women, children and youth to create local leader and changemakers who can determine community solutions.
We are engaging directly with the community through capacity building and also working to create a local ecosystem for the community to grow, learn and share local wisdom in collaborative and exploratory spaces. We have two full-time members working remotely with the community in Champawat. We have already been working for Prangan to engage the communities through various activities:
Community learning center: A library and a center with stationary and other resources for the community to come together and engage in the process of knowledge creation and sharing
Mehfil: A monthly gathering of all the artists, poets, writers, musicians and performers to get a platform to share, connect and collaborate together
Kahaniyaar: A weekly storytelling initiative to engage adolescents in culture, politics and literature through stories and activities
Second language learning through process drama: Teaching English to adolescent, youth and women by creating a world of characters and institution to understand their immediate surrounding and the world at large
Regular workshops/engagement: Offering a spectrum of skills and workshops about fine arts, upcycling, crafts and other things to constantly engage them in creative processes
