    from Begusarai, Bihar

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

My name is Rupam K. I have been accepted into Fletcher School, Tufts University, USA for a Masters in International Business (MIB) and this is my appeal for support - A first generation learner who would step out of this country to pursue higher education.

Growing up in Begusarai, a small town in Bihar, I have very closely witnessed my mother's struggles, her opinions were never considered because she didn’t contribute to the family's income. This has left an imprint on me and shaped my thought process.  I promised myself that I would be the one to change this narrative in my family and my community. My mother encouraged me to pursue a good education and later when I got into college, my aunt pitched in to support my education. Hence, I see my education as a pathway for creating similar opportunities for women in my community.

Academia and Professional Experience:

I have studied Integrated BA-MA in Social Sciences (Specialisation in Public Policy and Governance) at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai (Hyderabad Campus). After my post-graduation, I worked with research-based organisations and my experiences are as follows:

  • Developed branding activities for Gender Action Plan Project, which included marketing strategy, social media campaigns, and promoting the project on various platforms to broaden outreach to informal sector women across northern India.
  • Worked on piloting and executing Medha’s Career Advancement Bootcamp (MCAB) project sponsored by MIT to increase the effectiveness of employability outcomes across 26 colleges in northern India, particularly women
  • Conducted impact assessment of a livelihood-based project in Sikkim, India  to understand the digital financial literacy of women who are dependent on tourism as a primary source of Income.
  • Designed and executed the Biomass project, resulting in boosting the rural economy by providing seasonal employment and access to electricity to 4,702 workforces from 133 villages in northern Sierra Leone. Also, conducted primary research and formulated strategies to increase women's participation rate by 33 percent.

    My Goal !!

I have a keen interest in policy research and I have worked in this field for 4+ years  and wish to further my education. I want to deepen my understanding of women-related issues and craft concrete solutions through quantitative policy approaches. This advanced master's program will unlock so many opportunities  for me to aid thousands of other women to achieve education and other basic necessities, especially lower-income women from developing economies.

    Why I need Financial Aid:

Pursuing higher education at this university is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me, however it is financially draining and coming from a family whose primary source of income comes from agriculture, it is  impossible to arrange for the funds needed. keeping my higher education goal in mind, I started saving early in my job. But since I have mostly worked with not-for-profit organisations and this has not been enough.  Unfortunately, I lost my job due to the COVID pandemic last year. Hence, I had to rely on my savings for six months. And, I believe this is a vicious cycle – can only those who afford it, deserve it!!

I plan to fund part of my tuition fees through education loans from Prodigy and MPower Finance (loan has been not approved yet) and living expenses through part-time jobs. But, due to the high amount of tuition fee, I need your help to achieve my dream of attaining this prestigious degree.

Also, for the next year, I am planning to apply for external scholarships which would help me to pre-plan for my 2nd year tuition fee.

    Fees & Living Expenses:
The Costing Structure (one year expenditure- MIB program) as provided by the University: Total Shortfall = 53,366 USD (INR 42, 69,280 Approx.)
Your contribution will be of great help to me. I sincerely thank you for contributing and spreading this campaign through your personal and professional networks. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at I would like to be as transparent as possible with this campaign and its funding request!!
