Repair Cafe Bengaluru Foundation (https://www.facebook.com/Repaircafe080Bangalore/)
raised money from its training program for children, Tinker Kinder (https://www.facebook.com/events/1323321691202603/ )to help few repair persons in areas of Yeshwanthpur, Kalyan Nagar and Indiranagar with small amounts ranging from 5000/- to Rs 3,000/-. But this help is required by many more around our city. Over the years, Repair Cafe Bengaluru has engaged with a network of about 40 repairpersons, who are desirous of such small help. This will enable them to wade through the harsh lockdown period and the subsequent slowdown. These repair persons are part of the collar-less un-organized sector who perform skilled works like cobblers, alteration tailors, key makers, watch repairs, bicycle repairs, electrical repairs and so on. They form part of the city support system and provide us with sustainable living by giving a second chance to our much-loved possessions before discarding to the landfill. Such odd jobs provide employment opportunities to many small entrepreneurs at no extra cost to the government. But they have been abandoned without a thought at this time of crisis. Don't let them fall through the cracks. They are skilled people and need to be nurtured the way we nurture our engineers and doctors.
In Repair Cafe Bengaluru workshops, 495 people have walked-in so far. There they received help from more than 15 volunteers. Due to the efforts of all these people, around 1985 kilos of items were prevented from the waste heap. Repair Cafe's around the world have jointly saved 3,00,000 objects from the waste mountain.
