We are Shriram Education Trust, an education trust established in year 2000 by Mrs. Usha G. Singh and Mr. Gulab Chandra Singh, to combat the issue of education inequity in our region i.e. Kandivali(E), Mumbai, Maharashtra. We have our school Shriram Vidya Mandir in Kranti Nagar community in Kandivali(E).
The demography of this area is composed of migrant workers from UP & Bihar, Adivasi families and a small number of Dalit Marathi families. The population of this area is above 100 thousand souls (Census-2011) and has grown exponentially since then. The living conditions are as good as any other slum in the country and above 90% of the working-class people living here are daily wage laborers, rickshaw drivers, maids, hawkers, street vendors, and domestic help, etc.
In the wake of the global COVID-19 crisis and the subsequent lockdown, the families (average: 4-6 members) have exhausted their little savings (if any) and now into 2nd week of the lockdown are facing problems to provide for the basic need of food and groceries. Now, many of these families are at the threshold of starvation and are reaching out to us for support.
We are providing groceries and basic supplies to the distressed people prioritizing on the basis of need and so far we have been able to maintain that nobody goes hungry. We are distributing ration packets, which includes the below-mentioned items, and is good enough for sustaining a family of 4-6 members for two weeks.
The content of the ration kit is as follow-
- 10 Kg Rice
- 1 Kg Masoor Dal
- 1 Kg Toor Dal
- 5 Kg Atta
- 1 Kg Sugar
- 1 Kg Salt
- 1 Kg Oil
- 250 gm Tea
- 100 gm Chili powder
- 100 gm Turmeric powder
- 1 toilet soap (antibiotic)
(Note: all our volunteers and ground staff are taking due precautions while the distribution of the ration packets and field visits)
We are aiming that no one goes hungry in these testing times and we are trying our best to make it possible. But, now that we are entering the third week of the lockdown and the demand is increasing we are not able to provide for all of them as we get hundreds of distress calls daily.
Your contribution will help us to keep us up and running and no contribution is big or small. Every penny counts (Each drop of water contribute to making the ocean so vast)
