    This fundraiser will benefit

    Raj Shrivastav

    from Kolkata, West Bengal

Dear family, friends and well-wishers,

On the 21st of October 2021, our Papa, Mr Raj Shrivastav, tested COVID-19 positive despite being double vaccinated. This has taken a strong toll, impacting his lungs and he is now on ECMO support (artificial breathing), which will be a 1-2 month treatment at Medica Super Speciality hospital in Kolkata. All other parameters are normal and he just needs time on ECMO for the lungs to heal naturally. Despite pooling in our family savings, we are unable to meet the astronomical financial costs and hence we are kindly appealing to you for support, however small that might be. While we are funding INR 70 Lakhs (USD 95k, SGD 125k, GBP 70k) we require donations of INR 120 Lakhs (USD 160K, SGD 220K, GBP 120K) to cover the rest of the costs.

Our Papa is our pillar, full of life, ever the tennis enthusiast. He is always joking, and even till the day before he was put on a ventilator, complained about the hospital food and asked if we could bring him something more palatable like a home-made aloo tikki. When Ranveer visited him today (10 Nov) in the ICU, he responded to him by nodding, and looked him in the eye when he told him “be like Federer - in control, be like Nadal - a fighter, be like Djokovic - mentally strong and then you will win the final set.” We desperately want our Papa to come back, fit and well, to sit and joke at the dining table and continue to analyse tennis matches.

Papa with Mumma

The doctors (at Medica Hospital in Kolkata) have suggested that the line of treatment he needs is ECMO and that other than his lungs, his heart, liver, brain and kidneys are in good condition. They have assured us that there have been several patients who have benefited from ECMO and returned back to their families and their usual lives. We need to give Papa this chance - the chance to attend Ranveer’s upcoming marriage that Papa is ultra excited about. While we are funding INR 70 Lakhs (USD 95k, SGD 125k, GBP 70k) we require donations of INR 120 Lakhs (USD 160K, SGD 220K, GBP 120K) to cover the rest of the costs. (details are below for reference)

Papa with Ranveer

ECMO is an extremely intensive, invasive and expensive treatment, but it’s the best chance Papa has and every donation from you will go a long way in bringing him home soon. (details are below for reference)

We thank each and every one of you who has taken the time to keep our Papa in your prayers, and to drop by this page. Any amount, even the smallest will be greatly appreciated. Even if you can’t, please do share this appeal on your social media, in case someone else can help. We trust in you and in God that Papa will come back home to us, fit and well.

For Papa, his family is his everything

Apart from our heartfelt thanks, god forbid, you / someone you know is diagnosed with COVID-19 in the future, please reach out to us - shrivastav.ranveer@gmail.com or shrivastav.rohit@gmail.com. We will leave no stone unturned in providing you with all the information / experience and financial support we have to help you as well.

Gratefully,
Reema Shrivastav (wife), Rohit (elder son), Nikita (Daughter in law), Ranveer (younger son), Rhea (to-be daughter in law)

Treatment so far:

Papa was admitted to Belle Vue hospital, Kolkata on 23rd October and received treatment there in the form of high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) as well as BiPAP (Bilevel Positive airway pressure non-invasive ventilation) but he continued to deteriorate. He also received high dose steroids, remdesivir (anti-viral treatment), antibiotics as well as an extremely expensive drug, tocilizumab (monoclonal antibody treatment), that required state level approval. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, Papa continued to deteriorate and required transfer to Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Kolkata. By God’s Grace the transfer went smoothly and Papa is now receiving ExtraCorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) treatment in a highly specialised and intensive treatment unit at Medica. This treatment involves 24 hours continuous removal of blood from Papa’s body to use an external machine to add oxygen to his blood and return it to his body as his lungs are currently unable to do this due to the severe lung damage caused by Covid-19.

The financial aspects:

The doctors have told us that Papa’s lungs are badly damaged and will require a long time on ECMO so that his lungs get the rest they need in order to slowly recover. They have asked us to plan for Papa to be on ECMO for at least 1-3 months after which he will need to be on a ventilator for a while before he can be weaned off to nasal oxygen. Given the intensity and complexity of the treatment Papa has received already and is currently receiving, the medical costs are skyrocketing.

We will be using all of Papa’s medical insurance and a substantial part of the family savings to provide Papa with a chance. Despite all of this, we anticipate that the costs of Papa’s treatment are going to far exceed what we can finance given that Papa’s treatment will not just stop at ECMO, but continue with post ECMO ventilator requirements, hospitalisation and post hospitalisation home recovery. We would not have resorted to crowdfunding if we had the means to reasonably finance this ourselves. Please find below an estimation of the medical bill.

  • Funds already consumed: INR 30 Lakhs (USD 41K, SGD 55K, GBP 30K)
  • Additional funds being arranged by the family: INR 40 Lakhs (USD 53K, SGD 72K, GBP 40K)
  • Expected additional funding required via crowdfunding: INR 120 Lakhs (USD 160K, SGD 220K, GBP 120K)
This is based on 3 months ECMO + post ECMO recovery on the ventilator.
