I hope you are doing well.
I, Rahul Kumar, got an admission offer letter from the University of Gottingen in the master's program "Modern Indian Studies" and the program will begin in October 2021.
I am a first-generation to go to University.
My name is Rahul Kumar, and I come from the Buxar district of Bihar. I completed my primary, middle, secondary and senior secondary schooling from Bihar from my native village. After that, I left the village and went to Delhi University for my graduation.
When your only option is a government school in one of the poorest districts of India, located in an old building whose roof has not even seen a repair in the last twelve years, to make it to one of the top universities in India and eventually catching up to the dream of having a fair education, for a moment, felt surreal. Migration to India’s capital for higher education, the momentum does not disappear, but it ends up destroying the very idea of good governance, equality, and a fair meritorious system that you have perceived to exist all the time. A journey like this gives one not just a first-hand understanding of the rural development sector but also immense motivation to pursue further studies to understand the intricacies of the subject.
The interdisciplinary nature of the M.A programme at the Centre for Modern Indian Studies at Georg-August-Universität is what makes me interested in this course, and I believe it can benefit my research interests at the masters level of education.
Interestingly, my UG program at the University of Delhi was also an interdisciplinary program touching on economics, politics, history, geography, literature and society, which further trained me in field research alongside creating theoretical understanding. This allowed me to pursue the subjects of my interests and engage in various social work projects. It introduced me to develop key on-ground research skills through hands-on learning processes. I have carried out multiple research and projects during the three years of my graduation. Apart from my studies, I have worked at various places in the summers, which have strengthened my motivation to have a career in the economic development sector. I have experience working with many governmental, non-governmental, civil societies, and think tanks organisations. Some of them are NITI Aayog, World Bank Project, Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health-INC, Japan Social Foundation Project, CSDS-Delhi.
At the Georg-August-Universität, I am interested in engaging in the development economics of India, wherein I aim to develop key theoretical and professional skills required for economic development through case methods, international approaches, and various models. For my further higher studies, I believe through the CeMis master's program I will be able to understand the Indian political economy to design public policy-based solutions for complex societal problems, which are growing more dynamic and interconnected with each passing year. And I believe that's how I can dedicate my professional life to bringing back the missing 'public' into policymaking. Opportunities to research on these lines would help me in going ahead with my aspirations for reform. The interdisciplinary nature of the master's program and the international perspective will be enlightening in understanding the crisis in contemporary India and help in bridging the loopholes with the guidance of the community at CeMIS.
CeMIS, being one of only a few centres in Europe and South Asia that has an interdisciplinary approach to the study of modern India, makes it an attractive destination to carve my scholarship. Also, being a student of Modern Indian Studies at the Georg-August-Universität will help me explore my interests and allow me to learn about various subjects in humanities and social sciences from a diverse group of students who come from all around the globe. Being home to the world-renowned universities, Germany and the institute's opportunities can help me achieve my dream of growing to become a scholar of the development sector one day.
I believe that with my background in grassroots research and humanities & social sciences coupled with my passion for understanding the Indian political and economic landscape from an international perspective at the Centre for Modern Indian Studies at the Georg-August-Universität, I will be able to contribute and payback to my country and society.
I think that everyone should be allowed to follow their goals, and I am committed to fighting for equal rights for all people everywhere. So, with passion and desire for change, I continue my fight and hope to make the most of any possibilities that come my way. This is what inspired me to work hard in order to study at some of India's top institutions; now, with the help of all, I will be able to pursue my dream to study at Georg-August-Universität.
Research Interest Areas: Human Rights, Human Development, Public Policy, Subaltern studies, Film Studies.
What I need
Even last year I secured a seat from three foreign universities, moreover, I was able to get a partial scholarship in two of the universities. And in one of the universities, I wasn't required to pay any tuition fees. However, Due to financial constraints, I could not arrange the processing fees and unfortunately, due to lack of money, I couldn't reach the university to pursue my master's degree.
This year I also don't have to pay any tuition fee for this university, but I need a processing amount which is needed before going to the university. Without this amount, I will not be allowed to get into university. I request you all to help me out in meeting my financial requirements.
My father is a farmer, and my mother is an ASHA worker. My family's annual income is only INR 80,000 (1075 USD/annum). It is challenging for my family to arrange money or take out loans since it is a massive amount.
I would like to inform you that this fundraiser I am doing is the last resort as I have not been able to receive any funding from any of the sources, whether it is government or private.
Here is the estimated cost that I required;
Total:- [Semester Fee (registration fee)+ Block Account + Flight ticket + Medical Insurance + Visa + Others ] = Approx.13,600 euro
~ INR: 12,00,000 ( estimated.)
