Last month, Hariram had a spate of health crises, for which he was hospitalised on two occasions in close succession. The first was because he had Dengue, during the treatment of which, he was diagnosed with Hypertension and Diabetes. A few days upon returning from the hospital, he had a major heart attack, for which he had to have an emergency angioplasty. He was being treated at Saifee Hospital.
He is illiterate, and already has an outstanding loan of Rs 2 Lakhs, in addition to medical bills of Rs 3 Lakhs, which his current employers have fronted. He is currently working as domestic staff, but repayment of all loans based on his income will take years. Despite being Scheduled Caste, Hariram does not have the requisite documents to prove eligibility for various reimbursement schemes.
