My name is Rachana and I have been offered admission into MA- Criminology and Criminal Justice course at University of Keele, United Kingdom, beginning from September, 2021. Throughout my law school I have maintained an excellent academic score with 8.66/10 CGPA in my B.A.LL.B. (Hons.) course at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow (Batch 2012). Later I have worked for the empowerment of village girls as my journey for higher studies was full of struggles. I had also secured good rank in my LL.M. in Access to Justice with 7.4/10 at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai (Batch 2016).
I have an INR 5 Lac Excellence Scholarship and INR 1 Lac Developing Countries Scholarship from Keele University. However the same is not enough for INR 22 Lakh (approx.) annual tuition fees (16) for the course with hostel charges(6).
While I am currently trying to seek some bank loans but that too will be just around IRS 5 Lac only, and 5 lacs have been lended by some friends and family, therefore need to seek your help for the rest of 4.5 lacs, as some part was borrowed from friends. I hail from a small village and a first generation woman to go to pursue law or go out for higher studies, in an area where underage marriage was established practice till previous generation. Without support, it will not be possible for me to pursue this once in a lifetime opportunity.
After my LL.M. I was selected as a TISS fellow under the Criminology and Justice Department of TISS Mumbai to work for the Empowerment, Education and Legal awareness action program with the Nomadic or De notified communities in Sikar, Rajasthan for three years. I have been working for women rights and empowerment of Nomadic communities in Sikar, for last 6-7 years. Most of it was not paid. I am also connecting village girls and nomadic or denotified community children with schools. I have also applied for the prestigious Chevening scholarship where I was selected among 5500 candidates for interview out of 63000 applicants from the world, but unfortunately could not secure a seat, hence this request here.
Now i feel the need to sharpen my skills to be professional and learned person to fight for justice. This course will boost my skiils and give my work an edge, while criminal justice is old subject but the research/studies in India are yet to get that much pace, getting this education from the advanced country in this field will help me better help the communities who are considered 'Born Criminals' and also improve my job perspectives.
On my return, I wish to continue helping people to seek justice and will keep raising their issues at the public platforms to connect them with the mainstream society and writing and research on issues of communities or women and law. I further plan to set up a legal aid clinic for these communities and rural women, who have received little attention within legal aid movement and welfare policies of the government; with a vision to secure ‘Justice for All’.
For this I require your help and assistance in making my dream a reality.
