My friend's mother, Mrs. Purnima Biswas has been diagnosed with cancer for 4 years. They have been going for regular check-ups and chemotherapy to Tata Medical Centre, Mumbai.
However, in the midst of the Covid pandemic, she started getting worse and was diagnosed with obstructive jaundice due to distal cholangiocarcinoma. This led to her bilirubin count increase dangerously that needed to be operated on immediately. However, due to a sudden progression of cancer to stage IV, the operation couldn't be done.
Doctors have stated that we need to perform an immediate Whipple procedure. This is a major operation with 30-50% chance of major complications and 3-5% of patients do not survive it. Chances of mortality largely depend on the urgency of the operation and the various risk factors. If the complication persists, we may even have to do triple bypass surgery. Due to her condition worsening so suddenly, she cannot travel to Mumbai and get treated there, so the family has resorted to getting her treated in the Kolkata branch of Tata Medical Centre.
The cost of the operation, taking into consideration the complications and subsequent surgeries amounts to around Rs. 10 lakh.
My friend Sohom, who works as a small-time construction freelancer, is the sole earning member of his family; has exhausted all his funds over the years on treatment and medications and cannot pull this major surgery of his mother without your help.
