Join Lagoo To Help Hearing Impaired

Puneet Lagoo, pursuing a B.Tech degree in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology from IIT Delhi. He was exposed to coursework from a diverse set of fields, and soon he developed a strong interest in problem solving and design— in which he is now pursuing a minor degree. The projects that he was involved in gave him the opportunity to make a small, yet significant difference in the lives of the poor and excluded people. This motivated him to pursue a semester long internship at SELCO foundation, Bengaluru, to look further beyond the coursework, and acquire practical knowledge. His work has been recognised by the Industrial and Research Development (IRD) Student Startup Action, in the form of an award of 2,00,000 INR—for proposing an efficient mechanism that led to a reduction in 40% energy consumption of autoclaving processes in primary health care, a problem picked up from semester intern. He is planning to develop this technology and hand it over to someone on the field to make sure it is getting implemented.

He was keenly looking for research internships for this summer (May-July, 2019) and He has been offered a position to work at the University of Colorado Boulder, under the mentorship of Dr. Anu Sharma (principal investigator at the Brain and Behavior lab) http://www.colorado.edu/eeglab/ His work there would be to understand how auditory information is processed in the human brain; what are the possible effects of intervention with hearing aids and implants; and computational approaches to signals encoding the auditory cortex. This is something he can deeply relate to—he is a victim of sensorineural hearing loss that affected his left ear at the age of 12 and on the other side he is a big music enthusiast. He really wish to do something for the excluded population of people dealing with hearing loss just like himself, who can't afford surgeries and bone anchored implants.

Apart from his knowledge by taking courses on computational neuroscience and having a fair knowledge on data processing of fMRI and EEG data set—as a result Dr. Anu has showed interest in his profile and is trying her best to work out possibilities. However, she is not sure if she can use her lab funds to support his stay or travel. Her encouragement made him want to take some responsibility but he cannot afford his stay in Colorado and the travel expenses. The funds he received from IRD cannot be used because he has to use those for that particular project. He certainly don't want to put more weight on his retired father's shoulders.

His experience in design has made him believing in providing practical solutions to problems, with a holistic approach considering the surroundings of the user group(s). If he gets this opportunity to do a research project, it would open avenues to enter this sector of neuroscience allowing him to work on a practical affordable solutions. He eventually want to work for the population in India dealing with the same problem (63 million people in India suffer from significant auditory loss—Indian Journal of Otology)

The funds raised will be used as per the following:
Flight tickets:        USD 1120 (INR 80,000 approx)
Accommodation: USD 2100 (INR 1,50,000 approx)
VISA fees:              USD 160 (INR 11,400 approx)
Total:                     USD 3380 (INR 2,40,000 approx)

This opportunity can open a direction which he can only dream of. It would be very grateful if he can get any support to make this happen. Hoping for the best. Any amount would be a great deal.

Thanks for hearing out!
