Nashik: A fungus called Mucormycetes is raising its ugly head again in this second wave of the corona. The death rate is about fifty percent and in patients with brain involvement, nearly a hundred percent. Diabetic patients with covid are the ones that deadly “black fungus” has zeroed in on.
Apart from the havoc, the covid pandemic is causing, to add to the woes mucormycosis is a raging war of its own. The number of post covid patients with mucor was low, however, the number in the second wave has overwhelmed otolaryngologists across the country. In patients with diabetes, this mutated strain is acting as a catalyst. The mucormycosis infection is not contagious. Early diagnosis and treatment are a must for survival and a healthy life ahead. The symptoms of the disease are watery blood-stained nasal discharge, nose block, pain over the face, eye, forehead, and temple region, drooping of eyelids, loss of vision. In case of experiencing the fore mentioned symptoms contact your ENT surgeon at the earliest to diagnose and manage this ugly disease. The mortality of covid is five percent as compared to the mortality of mucor which is nearly 100 percent in untreated cases. The symptoms rapidly progress from sticky blood-stained nasal discharge to loss of vision and brain involvement. Hence quick action against the progress of the disease is quintessential. Treatment includes surgical removal of involved organs and intravenous injections of, preferably, ‘liposomal’ Amphotrecin B. since the last few days patients are being treated at Indorewala ENT Institute in Nashik. Immediately after hospitalization liposomal Amphotericin B injections are started. The requirement of these injections is about ninety to one hundred injections per patient over a period of three to four weeks. For the more economically backward sections lyophilized Amphotericin B is available. Once the optimal amount of Amphotericin B is given the fungus does not grow back.
To prevent this deadly black fungus prevention of COVID 19 disease is essential by use of masks, social distancing, and vaccination. Not only during or after covid but constant checks on blood sugar levels particularly in diabetics is a must. “Do not be afraid but be vigilant for its symptoms for eternal vigilance is the price of safety”.
