Story

The people of Ghoramara Island need your help.

Ghoramara is a small island approximately 5sqKm in the area and around 90Km south of Kolkata, India in the Sunderban Delta complex of West Bengal. It is very close to Kakdwip and Sagar Island. The island has shrunk dramatically over the years, due to erosion and the sea levels rise.

During the Yaas cyclone, the island was completely devastated and has not recovered from the losses yet. The population of the island is still dependent on reliefs. We, Prantik Sunderban Welfare Association, have already donated 200 mosquito nets and clothes to the people. But still, most people are spending their days in misery.

We plan to feed them nutritious food for at least some days. Feeding them for a week will cost around ₹70,000.

The people are dependent on freshwater from ponds for drinking, cooking, irrigation, and other household needs. However, ponds are contaminated with saltwater due to floods that occurred after the Yaas Cyclone. We plan to pump out the salt water from these ponds. As it is the monsoon season, rainwater can fill the ponds and help needy people. The cost of such a pump ranges from ₹20,000 to ₹25,000.

The women are not well aware of menstrual health and hygiene. We would like to raise awareness about it and provide them with sanitary napkins.

In addition to these, we also want to help the tribal communities in rebuilding their houses. All these will incur additional costs.

That is why we are asking for your help. To stand with us, to uplift the conditions of these marginalized people.
