Story

We started ‘Savitribai Phule and Fatima Sheikh Learning Centre’ (SPFSLC) in December 2020, and for many girls, it has become a space to fulfill their desire of continuing education through the National Institute of Open Schooling. The need for these centers came up in one of the community interactions we were conducting to understand resilience strategies in Sankalit Nagar, Juhapura (during COVID lockdown in one of the most underserved areas of Ahmedabad). Schooling screeched to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Inequity in what one can deliver to students became glaring through the digital divide in teaching resources that students in underprivileged urban areas can access. More than 75 per cent of students we interacted with had already left schooling due to either non-payment of school fees or the unavailability of government schools after passing the 8th standard.

SPFSLC caters to almost 50 adult girls (<14 years), who dropped out of schools due to COVID 19 lockdown as their families lost livelihoods. It is a community-driven initiative in one of the most underserved urban ghettos in Ahmedabad.

In addition to the curriculum, education at SPFSLC includes awareness on women’s rights. We conduct capacity building programmes for young girls and adult women, legal counseling for cases of domestic violence, divorse and maintenance, and build perspectives on intersectional issues of women from other marginalized sections such as tribals and Dalits. Women who would have otherwise spent their pre and post marriage life within the boundaries of their homes step out of the house and city to learn, work, earn and empower. In addition to engaging for individual development, we train community leaders who in-turn multiply the impact of our community initiatives. The trainings we offer through camps and schemes on resistance and advocacy enable women to fight for their education, health, career, maintenance, discrimination and choice.

We educate women on new laws like Right to Education, Right to Food, Domestic Violence Act and the Public Distribution System. We also enable women to fight violence at all three levels- domestic, class and caste.

Currently, we also launched a Python Learning Program for all our girls in partnership with Navgurukul. We aspire to enable these girls to take up jobs in IT industry and grow as professionals. All the girls are first-generation learners and come from extremely underprivileged communities.

We are raising the funds for center to continue its operations and support the logistical cost of running three programs simultaneously.
