This fundraiser is meant to help Parimala J., a domestic worker, raise school fees for her three children attending Prestige Public School, North Bengaluru. Parimala cleans houses for a living while her husband is a construction and farm worker currently working in Tamil Nadu. The couple work incredibly hard to send their three children to school so that they have a better life than their parents. But the lockdowns have been incredibly hard on this family. Because of school shutdown and switch to online schooling, the two older children, Savita in class 10 and Jayanalini in class 7 have had to share one phone and take turns attending school. The youngest Darshan, now in class 2 has had no access to online school most of the year. The parents are worried that their children, all of whom are first generation learners, are falling behind.
Schools have now re-opened in Bengaluru and the kids have a chance to catch up. But the parents have a backlog of fees to be paid to school, including tuition fees and annual admission fees (for books, uniform etc) from 2019-2021. Because of multiple lockdowns, Parimala has lost a lot of household work while her husband is trying to make ends meet by doing farm work. They are trying to borrow money from money lenders in their native village, but this will only put them through a cycle of debt and predatory interest rates. Your contribution can help us get these kids back into school without adding additional burden on this family.
