    Pankajam Girls Higher Secondary School

    from Bodinayakanur, Tamil Nadu

Pankajam school, located in the small town of Bodinayakanur in Theni district is a lifeline for 1150 girl students. Started 70 years ago with a vision to support women’s education, the school till now has empowered thousands of young girls from challenging backgrounds.Because of their strong efforts, the daughters of daily wage workers to housemaids could now learn to read and write. Majority of them being first in their family even to step inside a classroom. Over the years, through the institution’s grit, they have given quality education to them with the school even showing a considerable increase in rank holders. But a good learning environment is not only about having good teachers but also a well-built infrastructure. The major challenge here is the lack of basic amenities like restrooms.
Children from the class of 6 to 12 who study here has only 5 functional toilets for their use. Built decades ago, many of these washrooms are partially damaged and there is also high risk for infections. With the onset of puberty, these adolescent girls find it even more challenging to relieve themselves when nature calls. Broken doors and damaged roofs do not provide them with privacy.

Devashree Vasu, a passionate educator and a Teach for India Alum who is helping these students in providing an excellent education say, “This is the rural town in which I grew up…which have designed my life. The current condition of the school’s infrastructure is very poor. Even the basic amenities like bathrooms are lacking in the present context. I’m on a mission to build these washrooms for the students so that they can continue their education in a comfortable environment. For these children school is their happy place and I want to give the best for them”.

Devashree who has experience in the uplifting of the rural community and working for free education in the slum, wish to reach out to this community. She is determined to help by rebuilding the toilet for these girls which is one big step towards hygienic living.

She hopes to raise enough funds to build and renovate the washrooms and needs your help. Every little contribution you make will positively affect the lives of these girl children. The amount includes raw materials and labour charges
