Story

'Our Theatre Collective’ is a Bangalore based theatre collective that focuses on actor training with a vision to create original works/adaptations whose form is centered on the actor’s body, movement and voice.

Our Theatre Collective was founded 12 years ago and is registered as a trust. In 2018, we got a theatre studio in Bangalore, which we fondly call, ‘Our Theatre Studio’.

Our Theatre studio has been the birthplace of many original productions and creative journeys. It has hosted a diverse range of performances and continues to do so. The studio is also a rehearsal space for other theatre groups.

Being in a residential building, we have to ensure our work, which involves movement, projection of voice and intense body work, does not hamper the peace of building dwellers. We’ve had complaints in the past about noise and actors have worked hard to mitigate the effects of their work. This was an office space converted to a theatre studio and lacks soundproofing facilities. Yet there are ways in which we can insulate the studio to reduce the spread of sound, so that our work doesn’t travel to the homes of others. Even though they come at a cost, soundproofing measures are extremely necessary for us to take in order to co-exist with the surrounding area, else we run the risk of losing the space.
While sound creeps out water creeps in. Heavy rains in Bangalore create havoc at the studio as the water seeps in through the doors and roof. Windows too do not close properly due to worn out runners, allowing more rain water into the studio.
Openings in the ceiling panels and gaps between doors let in water putting our props and costumes at a huge risk. It also disrupts work and limits the workable area to a small part of the studio.
Power-packed performances and rehearsals are more effective if they are powered by electricity! We’ve had candle-lit shows due to sudden, long hours of power cuts which affect our work to a big extent.
Your support with operational and administrative costs can stop the curtains from closing down on the space.

1) Operational costs include :
  • UPS: Quoted at ₹ 31,000/-
  • Soundproofing top panel: Quoted at ₹ 1,98,600
  • Fabrication for doors to stop flooding + Roof repair +        Window repair Quoted at  ₹ 71,500/-

2) Rent and Operational costs:  The studio rent , operational costs and other utility costs like drinking water etc come up to an  Annual expenses : ₹ 2,40,000/-  (₹ 20,000/- a month)

Apart from creating plays, Our Theatre also focuses on training young and upcoming actors to perfect their craft with an emphasis on preparing their bodies and enhancing the physical, non-verbal aspects of acting. We believe in active community engagement and collaboration. We take theatre to public spaces with our public intervention program See-Saw featuring short topical performances in public parks which entertain, engage, and provoke questions on issues of contemporary relevance.

Your contribution will not just help maintain a space but will sustain an active theatre community of actors, theatre makers and audience. Please help us reach our goal of Rs. 5,52,000 so that we can keep the space and the art that it supports alive.
