Second wave of Covid- 19, has brought the life and livelihood of thousands of handicraft artisans in the state to a grinding halt. It is a question of survival now. The artisans who used to keep up the heritage of Odisha through their magnificent craftworks are looking at others for support. Their products are not essential commodities that can sale in the market. They primarily depend on tourists and art lovers who purchase their exquisite products. Due to the unprecedented crisis, the tourism sector is badly affected. It is not likely that in near future the industry will come back to its normal form. Then, what these artisans will do? How do they continue their work when there are no takers? How do they sustain their livelihood? These are critical questions at a critical time.
ORUPA, one of the oldest associations of handicrafts artisans in the state used to nurture more than 10000 handloom and handicrafts artisans in the state in the form of marketing support, welfare activities, providing of raw materials, and standing with them at their difficult times.
Yes, it is indeed a difficult time for us and them. We together could solve the crisis. Our effort is to make them stand and sustain their livelihood first. The works come later when markets open up and there are many takers of their products. ORUPA will do its best to provide the opportunity to sell.
