We have been lucky to have this opportunity to feed stray animals during the lockdown. By God's grace, we have never fallen short of money to buy food for dogs and cats. We have never run out of food and people have been really generous in extending help by donating money for the same.
We have been feeding stray animals for many years and we will continue to do so in the future also. Although in lockdown the number of animals we feed has increased considerably as we understand that there is no means by which they can procure food for themselves. But again, we have prepared ourselves for the same and we have no issues when it comes on to feeding the strays.
But yes, there is one problem that we face every day. Almost every day we get about 5-10 calls about some animal meeting with an accident or getting sick due to dehydration or various other reasons. And we are requested to pick those animals from the location and admit them in the hospitals for the appropriate treatment. And we would love to help during such times as this is the very reason we have started with our NGO "Om Foundation". But not all our members own vehicles to get to the location of the animal and by the time any of our members reach the said location the animal in question has already lost a lot of blood. When we request any auto rickshaw or taxi driver to help us in getting the stray to the hospital, they often refuse as it would probably spoil their seats due to blood. And we understand that their autos and taxis are more important to them than the life of that stray because not everyone can be an animal lover like ourselves.
Therefore, we are striving hard to get ourselves an ambulance. If we accumulate the required funds to buy an ambulance then we are sure that we can avoid the aforesaid events and not be depended on anyone to save the life of the animal. As we can on our own take the stray to the hospital.
We are in good terms with every animal hospital. Be it Mumbai SPCA, Thane SPCA, IDA at Deonar, Utkarsh at Mulund West, etc. These hospitals don't ask anything from us but we always give some donation while admitting a stray as we know that the stray will have to be there for 5-6 days. These donations are really small and we can easily collect such amounts from our WhatsApp group. However, collecting donations for an ambulance is altogether a different thing. A Maruti Eco would cost us around 5 lakhs.
We are not able to raise funds for an ambulance. We can raise money for smaller goals and that money is often used in fulfilling other requirements like buying food or medicines and donating at hospitals.
Right now our only motto is to set up an ambulance because it becomes impossible for us to save animals due to the lack of having a vehicle. If we get our own ambulance then we can take the animal to the hospital at the earliest resulting in saving their lives faster.
An ambulance runs on CNG which means a small amount of Rs. 200/- would suffice for a day's CNG. This will make us save a lot of money with which we can complete other requirements like feeding and treatments.
