Nirmala lost her husband, Dorai, due to cancer in 2014. As Nirmala and Dorai were both suffering from Albinism, her only son, Magesh, aged 19, is also visually impaired. Mitra Foundation has supported Magesh’s education since 2014 till 10th class, and other needs of the family over the past 7 years.

Nirmala contracted COVID a month back. She was admitted to St John’s Medical College Hospital’s COVID ward on 18th May 2021. She has now developed severe post COVID complications, including Covid Pneumonia with severe ARDS. She has been in ICU, on ventilator for the past 2 weeks. Her lungs are severely affected. She has to be treated with Colistin 4.5MU IV injection for 14 days to treat this condition. The total cost for these injections is about Rs 1,45,000. This is life threatening condition and if not treated immediately, Nirmala might not survive.
