Hyderabad, like the rest of our country, is currently in a midst of oxygen crisis due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. A majority of hospitals in Hyderabad currently face a huge gap in the supply and demand of Oxygen and the demand is expected to increase as the case load rises.
A majority of symptomatic cases require some form of oxygen support. While patients with severe symptoms require Ventilator support, roughly 60-70% of the patients who require oxygen support can be provided relief with Oxygen Concentrator (OC).
Another crucial aspect in this regard is a hard-hitting reality that the city is not in a position to provide hospitalization to all patients who require health care support and we have reached almost 95% bed occupancy for Oxygen supported beds. The rise in demand for hospitalization currently outweighs the increase in bed capacity. As we have to make arrangements to provide symptomatic patients, currently in home isolation and who are waiting for hospitalization, adequate provisions to ensure management and recovery, Oxygen Concentrators further becomes a crucial aspect of symptomatic COVID management, and the urgency is evident.
While there are several initiatives on procuring Oxygen Concentrators across the country, a large majority of focus in placed on NCR and Mumbai and Hyderabad seems to be down the pecking order. To bridge this gap, Nirmaan, a not-for-profit, established by students of BITS Pilani, in-coordination with Alumni of BITS Pilani, are working towards procuring 200 Oxygen Concentrators in the first phase to provide Health Care Centres in Dire-need of Oxygen Concentrators and to patients in home-isolation across Hyderabad. A set of 200 OCs can provide a much-needed relief to over 350 patients at any point in time.
So far, we been conducted as need assessment across all public health care centres in the cities and continue to do so until we have a comprehensive list. We have also found a supplier and have been able to place an order for 200 OCs and the expected delivery date is 3rd May 2021. However, the total cost of procurement and logistics amount to a total of INR 1.3 Crores.
To help support us in this initiative, we request to kindly donate and share this amongst your circles as much as possible. We need to raise a total of INR 1.3 Crores in a period of one week to facilitate this.
