Reconstruction and Reinstatement: National Children’s Academy

We, at National Children's Academy, have been working with the school and its community in order to reinstate its infrastructure and give to its children a quality education.

History
National Children’s Academy, the first English Medium school in Wadgaon Sheri, Pune, Maharashtra was founded in the year 1974. It is run by Vidya Vikas Mandal Charitable Trust headed by Advocate A. J. Rananaware. This school was formed as an ancillary specifically for the migrant community which saw a tremendous increase in these years to support the sprawling infrastructure development of business parks and residential areas in the areas of Wadgaon Sheri, Kharadi and Viman Nagar. The school saw its first batch of graduates in the year 1984. Ever since then the school has seen over 800 alumni and alumnae graduate through the years.

Current Status
Although we have a legacy that precedes us, the current situation of the school not only fails to match up to its legacy, but is rather deplorable.
It is a small school that stands amidst a low-income community in Wadgaon Sheri.
The school earlier consisted of 4 rooms made with aluminium sheets, one of which is our staff room. It had two portable toilets which serve around 200 students as well as staff members. The school ground is the place that forms a small courtyard surrounded by these structures, where the foundation of  demolished classrooms still stands. With no outer walls, a play area, or properly constructed classrooms, and two porter potties for toilets, NCA clearly had very poor infrastructure.

However in 2017, the Round Table India approached the school and took up the onus of reconstructing the school.
The school at present has 6 brightly lit classrooms over two floors and well made bathrooms.

We now are trying to raise funds to build a library, science lab, computer lab, playground and being in other teaching and learning aids.

At present the school consists of over 226 students with a girl: boy ratio of 1:3. The school saw a considerable drop in the number of girls due to the lack of hygienic toilets in the school.

Project Drishtata

Phase 1: Pre-construction and During Construction
After a year of negotiations and multiple conversations with the school management, external stakeholders and other philanthropic groups, we have managed to secure an 1800 square feet land in the same premise as that of the school to make infrastructural changes to the present physical condition of the school.
Round Table India has taken up the initiative of not only providing the school with 80% of the cost of the reconstruction but has also taken up the onus of putting together all the resources and the manpower required to do the same.
While the talks to rebuild the school, saw its inception in 2017, it was only in August 2018 that we sealed the deal with them.
The construction of the school is scheduled to begin in April 2019 and for us to be able to do so, we need to raise a little over 11 lakhs as our share towards the budget estimate of the reconstruction which is about 54 lakhs.

Phase 2: Post-construction
The post-construction phase essentially envisions strengthening the workforce of the school and setting up school management structures to make the school a self-sustaining model. Setting up a functional and balanced School Management Committee and a balanced enrolment of both girls and boys to bring up the girl boy ratio will be the primary priority for this phase.

Funding and Donation
We bear a minimum of 20% of the expenses of the project, which roughly comes down to 10 lakhs of 50 lakhs which the entire project has costed out of which 3.5 lakhs has been raised already.
We are now looking to raise another 6.5 lakhs, out of which 1.5 lakhs will go towards the pending Phase 1 expenses and the rest of which will be required for the internal setup and Phase 3 ( library, labs, playground).

We implore you to donate generously, in whatever capacity possible. We also urge you to donate in kind, which may include, but are not limited to adopting one or more classrooms and setting up its infrastructure, providing benches, setting up our library, computer centre, science and math laboratories and equipping us with sports infrastructure.
