Nagraj(Age 62) is a resident of Bangalore. He is suffering from an acute liver infection, doctors call it as 'Sepsis caused by Liver Abcess'. This infection can become fatal if not treated properly.
He is living with his wife in SBM Colony, Bangalore in a small house. He was working in a private company as a clerk, currently retired. His wife teaches Carnatic Music - Divine Songs (devara namas, dasara padagalu) to school children. The only source of income for the family is from this. They have no savings and are struggling to make ends meet for their livelihood. He was recently treated for retinal eye disease and has gone through an eye operation. This has further worsened their financial situation.
It started as fever and tiredness initially on Aug 7th 2019. He was admitted to a near-by hospital. The hospital could not treat him because of the lack of equipment and he needed immediate medication. His platelets count was decreasing rapidly. He was taken to Apollo hospital in Jayanagar, where he was administered with platelets but his condition was still serious.
Currently doctors are not able to remove the abcess formation in his liver due to his low platelet count. Meanwhile the infection is affecting his kidneys and lungs. There are ruptures in his liver which are difficult to remove right now. He is being administered with antibiotics to reduce the spread of infection but it is a gradual recovery.
His liver has formed multiple pockets of puss formation which is difficult to remove by only medication and requires an invasive procedure.
Since the last 2 days after he was admitted to Apollo Hospital the cost of the treatment has gone upto 3 lakhs. Since the family is not able to afford the medication they are trying to shift him to another cheaper hospital. Doctors are saying he needs atleast a week of ICU care inorder to recover from this infection.
