Who are we? What is our vision?
We are Puja and Roshni, Teach for India fellows currently working in a municipality run government school in Ahmedabad. We are teaching 42 students of 4th and 5th class from the Thakkarbapa Nagar Community. Most of their parents are daily-wage earners and both parents work throughout the day. Most of our students are first generation learners and have little or no support in studies from their parents. The school is run on a rented compound which is in a battered condition, where generations of students have studied yet the infrastructure has never been upgraded. There are 6 rooms including an office cum classroom for 8 standards. Despite of such serious paucity of resources, we never cease to be amazed by the capabilities of our students. We believe that birth should not decide the quality of education that a child should receive, so we work day and night, incessantly to make that dream a reality for our children.

Struggles that we are facing? What do we need?
We aspire to provide our students with an effective and sustainable learning environment where learning is fun and is at pace with the world. We believe that it is possible even in a classroom that drips and floods in the monsoon, if there are right resources to enable the teachers to direct the curiosities and energies of the students in the right direction.
When we began teaching none of our children read at the grade level but with consistent efforts now more than half the students can read the grade level textbook. We now aim for our students to become constructive and create learning for themselves, in order to make them independent and their growth sustainable. For this we want them to possess English to English/ English to Gujarati Dictionaries for all our 42 children, so that they never feel discouraged to read at home just because there is nobody help them with their studies. Through this we also hope to build a habit of lifelong learning in our students.
Our world is changing but our methods of teaching are not. Its 2019, yet the most common way of teaching in most classrooms is a teacher reading out from the textbook. Even though various research talks about how different children/adults have different learning styles yet our education system fails to cater to such different needs. New technology continues to accelerate the growth of the world, yet none of the students in the class have ever operated a computer. We believe that having a laptop and TV in a classroom will fulfill both these needs, and would also spike the interest of the students in education, as it would enable us to bring the world to our classrooms. We aspire to provide for our children a digital classroom to enable us to equip them with 21st century skills. For this we need  a TV and 2 laptops.
Our kids have taken a liking towards reading and even though it swells our hearts when kids ask us for new books to read, it is also disappointing when we are unable to provide them with that. We hope to create a mini-library in the classroom to quench the thirst of our children to learn and read more.

How can you support us?
Even a small amount from you can help us make this dream a reality. The fund that we would raise would be used to buy a TV, laptops, HDMI cables, books (classical fictions, encyclopedias, Roald Dahl’s books etc), and dictionaries for our students.
A small contribution of yours can make a big change in their life.
