Our ordeal began on April 29th when my husband tested positive for COVID and he was taken to a government hospital in the Mysore district. But due to the non-availability of beds there, he was eventually admitted to a private hospital on May 1st. Our two children (aged 16 and 11) and I had also tested positive but recovered soon after. At first, Murugesh was in critical care for 33 days at Spandana hospital and later for 60 days again at Brindavan hospital in Mysore where he was re-infected.
The prolonged treatment required 60 to 70 liters of oxygen per minute to keep him alive initially; however, it has now come down to 6 to 8 litres per minute. So he needs 5 oxygen cylinders a day as treatment continues at home. Murugesh was also administered the Itolizumab drug twice to reduce inflammation, with each injection costing Rs. 30,000/-. That apart, his medical expenses for physiotherapy, oxygen at Rs. 450 per cylinder and other medicines have amounted to Rs. 5000/- per day for the past 15 days now. The doctors who saved my husband’s life believe it is an exceptional case of survival from COVID after such an extended stay in the ICU and he is now showing signs of improvement.
Even after 20 days of free treatment under the government’s Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust (SAST), we had to bear hospital expenses of Rupees 25 lakhs. We had to take out a huge loan and borrow money from family and friends. In case he is diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis as suspected, he may require a lung transplant bringing the overall cost to Rupees 50 lakhs. As of now, all his organ systems are functioning well except his lungs, so proper treatment for the next 30 days is crucial for his survival.
Please help me raise the amount towards his treatment as otherwise, the efforts of the doctors involved in saving my husband’s life and Murugesh’s courage in fighting COVID will be in vain. Every little contribution will be a lifesaver.
