Hailing from Patna, Bihar, Mukesh Kumar suffers from facial tumors and swelling in the face. The 29-year-old is the sole breadwinner in the family, and with him bedridden, the family is out of options and has turned to the community to seek funds for Mukesh's treatment.
The family came to town after taking loans from their village to change their lives. They managed to buy a pick-up vehicle, which Mukesh drove to feed his family and pay for his children's education. However, during the Covid-19 lockdown, when the family ran out of funds, Mukesh sold the vehicle, closing the door on his only source of earning.
Since then, the family strived to maintain a lifestyle. They barely had money to feed themselves, let alone pay for their children's academics. Moreover, after Mukesh fell sick, dark times began hovering over the Kumar's. Initially, it broke out as a rash under teeth, but after it started aching, Mukesh got the tooth removed, which triggered the spread of the tumor.
Soon his entire face, including his cheeks and neck, fell prey to the tumor, negatively affecting Mukesh's health. As of now, he is not able to eat, drink, or talk. With no food going inside his body and not enough funds for medicines, Mukesh's health is deteriorating with each passing day.
With her husband struggling with his medical ailment, Mukesh's wife has taken on the financial responsibility of the family but is failing miserably. As a means to an end, she started selling tiffin's. However, with tears in her eyes, she says, "I can hardly afford to feed him and my children, let alone seek treatment for him. But, I won't be able to see him die in front of my eyes."
Mukesh's family's priority at the time is only his health. However, even after stopping their children's education, the family still struggles to pay his medical bills. Moreover, both his children do whatever they can to support their parents, but their efforts and qualifications fall short when it comes to earning money.
Further, as her wife expresses her plight, Mukesh rests on a bed behind her, breathing heavily. "Only a wife knows what her husband means to her. I only want someone to save him somehow," she says. Later, she adds on, "I won't be able to forgive myself knowing that if I had money, I could have saved him.".
According to her, the last words she heard from her husband were that he told his family that he wants to dine with them and will be soon healthy enough to eat from a plate. However, days later, now he is unable to even drink water, let alone eat on his own or from a dish.
