We are students from the Madras School of Social Work, pursuing Post Graduation (Master of Social Work).

We are planning to go for a Rural Camp to Vathalmalai, a village in Dharmapuri District as a part of the course.

Vathalmalai is a tribal village located in Dharmapuri District comprising of 8 villages having over 5000 tribal people called “Malai Aazhi” living. The main occupations of the people are rearing cattle, agriculture and daily wages. There are 2 schools and 1 Day-care centre working in Vathalmalai.

            Rural Camp aims to carry out various projects, workshops, awareness and cultural programs relating to problems identified in the village. Few problems identified in the village are school dropouts, child marriage, lack of girl child education, lack of career knowledge, lack of water management and open defecation.

            Raising awareness regarding the usage of sanitary napkins is one of the key factors of our rural camp and that is one of the prerequisite of the village. 

           So, we are planning to install sanitary napkin incinerator and vending machines in Vathalmalai to provide a better sanitation in the village. We are also planning to provide few necessary things to the community (like buckets, mugs and dustbins) and the schools (like stationary items, black board, sports accessories and so on) in Vathalmalai.
