It is our first time (I
and Abhishek Tyagi
) starting a fundraiser campaign, entirely based on Assam’s hard-working spirit, and dedication to look after his family at any cost. We talked with Assam about how he lost his eyesight and now transformed his occupation from being a gardener to sitting on the footpath and asking for money and food. I have been supporting him (often with masala dosa, his favorite food) and in contact for the past few months.
Why we seek your help?
Muhamad Assam (85 years) has been visually impaired for five years due to inadequate surgery and lack of diagnosis for his eyesight loss. He is sustaining himself and the family by asking for money and food on the roadside (near to RRI west gate, Sadashivanagar). He is feeding a family of six members and pays the rent. He has six children in total, five daughters, out of whom three are married (financially helped by his employer, who doesn’t live here anymore). Assam tells us that it is becoming challenging to send his son (will be promoted to ninth grade this year) to school, and in the coming month, his son may have to drop out of school and work as an electrician to help feed the family. He wants to teach his son to at least 12th standard as most of the jobs have that as minimum criterion these days. Moreover, he dreams about marrying his fourth daughter (as it’s difficult without financial support).
How can you help?
Whether or not physically impaired people receive enough support to the conventional organizations, we exist to provide that support alongside their efforts. A fundraiser could bring Assam a financial helping hand that his employer once offered. He targets to use the money for his son’s education and, if possible, for his daughter’s wedding. In the meantime, we are working towards helping him find a suitable job through organizations like EnableIndia (any leads regarding this are welcome).
We will provide updates to you on how this fund is being utilized by Assam.
Thanks for your support
