I hope you are doing well.
My name is Mohd Javaid, and I am pleased to inform you that I got an offer to study for an M.A. in Anthropology and Sociology at the Graduate Institute of International and Developmental Studies, Geneva. The program will begin in September 2021.
I also hold offers in Anthropology from the School of Oriental and African Studies and Bristol University, but the M.A. program at Graduate Institute suits my field of research.
I was born and raised in a small village in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir at a time when uncertainty was at its peak in the region. My family’s financial condition has always been precarious, and the family income barely meets household expenses. I grew up in a state that perpetually witnessed civil unrest and conflict, and my adolescence was far from ideal. After completing my schooling in Rajouri, I got admitted to Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), from where I have completed my Bachelors from the Centre for Arabic and African Studies. I received a merit-cum-mean merit scholarship to pursue education at JNU. While pursuing Bachelors, I got inspired to pursue a career in academia to address the crucial issue pertaining to the marginalisation of different sections of society. So, I decided to pursue an inter-disciplinary masters from IIT Gandhinagar that I completed recently with a distinction. At the time of my masters at IIT Gandhinagar, I received a tuition fee waiver. The rest of my expenses are being met through a loan provided by the institute.
During my masters at IIT Gandhinagar, I completed two independent research projects in my second and third semester. The first one was in the context of the removal of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and how it raised concerns for the tribal communities of the region. The other was a blueprint for increasing the forest cover and providing sustainable and implementable solutions for energy requirements in the rural Himalayas. For my masters’ thesis at IIT Gandhinagar, I have worked on the impact of Scheduled Tribe status on the Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir. The study aimed to understand the legitimacy of the claims put forward by the Gujjar community of historical, social marginalisation and economic deprivation even after the extension of the ST status. The project found loopholes in the implementation of ST status that resulted in the less significant impact of this affirmative action from the state and suggested necessary measures. I am also working as a part-time mentor with the Kashmir Education Initiative since 2019. It involves interactions and engagements with a school student to exchange information and formulate goals, career exploration & incorporating learning style and tips to improve the academic score.
I have a deep interest in studying the borderland and the socio-cultural practices of the tribal communities residing in Jammu and Kashmir. The skills that I acquired at IIT Gandhinagar and lived experiences have shaped my interest in archiving and analysing trauma narratives of the sonic and luminescent violence faced by the people living at the borders of conflicted zones. I wish to explore epistemological areas that analyse forms of violence viz, corporeal, structural, institutional, and so on documented through literature, cinema, and ethnographic study.
I believe everyone should be able to pursue their dreams and want to fight for equal rights across humanity. So, with the zeal and enthusiasm to bring about change, I continue my struggle and wish to make the best use of whatever opportunities come my way. This is what motivated me to work towards studying at some of the best universities in India; now, I wish to continue that journey at the Graduate Institute.
What I need
The journey so far was not easy, but anyhow, I managed it with all the possible efforts from my end. Securing funds was not easy as the Covid-19 pandemic has created significant financial crunches in the education sector. Also, it is extremely difficult for my family to fund my studies.
I am planning to raise funds for my tuition fee and a very minimal amount for living expenses. To cover the rest of the amount, I will work part-time in Geneva. I request you to help me out in meeting my financial requirements.
Here is the estimated cost for the course;
