Story

Hello everyone, I am Mayuri Deka and I’m a queer person from Guwahati, Assam. I am writing to you all requesting you to help me fulfil my dreams of pursuing a PhD. I have been selected as a PhD scholar in the Centre for Climate Justice and Civil Engineering Department in Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland.
I need an approximate amount of Rs. 4,71,000/  to reach Glasgow .
Utilization of Funds:
1. Student Visa fee (UK): Rs. 40,000/
2. Medical insurance for 3 years: 2,00,000/
3. Quarantine for 10 days after reaching Glasgow: 1,81,000/
4. Travelling expenses: Rs. 50,000/
I have also been awarded a scholarship to cover my tuition fee and stay. However, there’s a chance that I might never reach Glasgow due to my dire lack of funds. I am short of money to even fly to Scotland.
I resigned from a teaching job in 2019 because I got an opportunity to pursue a PhD in New Zealand. But due to my financial conditions as well as the outbreak of Covid 19', I had to let go off my dreams once already. I was also left stranded in this pandemic without a suitable job with no savings.
My research work during this PhD would be to find out the impact of climate change in LGBTQIA+ community using engineering technology.
I have been working for LGBTQIA+ rights as a queer activist and poet. I have written about my struggle and identity in the vernacular language to raise awareness and provide support to the LGBTQIA+ community. I started Queer Adda which is a virtual LGBTQIA+ support help group, to help people who suffered discrimination and homophobia during the pandemic last year. I have conducted several creative writing workshops for the queer community in past years. Recently I have edited and released a queer anthology- Queerscape, in attempts to pave the way for a queer landscape in North East India which was inaugurated for the first time in Guwahati Book Fair 2021.
My identity as a queer person and my sexual orientation has always made me battle discrimination in a strictly hetero-normative society. And because of this I do not have much strong support in my life, let alone someone backing me up financially.
I have worked very hard all my life to reach where I am today and I’ve received a scholarship. And yet I might have to let go off this opportunity for the extra expenses that I can’t pay myself.
I can turn this opportunity into reality only with your help.
