Story

Namaste fellow human beings,

This is a fundraising page we created here at Mayavadi Organic Farm in Karnataka for our very dear project of building an ecological community space.

What is Mayavadi Organic Farm ?

Mayavadi is an experimental off-grid farm located in the Nandi Hills. Within over 9 years of existence, we have been experimenting with many different agricultural techniques which allow to combine farm activities and regeneration of ecosystems.

We are also a community space and our main aim is to hold space for people who come here to be inspired.

For this, we regularly host workshops, events and retreats, anywhere on the spectrum of permaculture, yoga, natural farming, seed saving, art. We also help people to set up their own reforestation and ecological landscaping projects.

I say we, because although Paula and I hold the main vision of Mayavadi, this place is the sum of all of the beings, from volunteers to guests, that have been leading it to be what it is now.

Nowadays, a diversity of animals and insects permanently or temporarily nesting among more than 400 essences of trees are present on our 1,5 acre of land, which makes it a unique sanctuary for wildlife. A lot of medicinally and culturally significant plants also grow there, therefore helping to preserve and spread Indian heritage as well as nursing plants from around the world.

So what is the project about?

At the moment, we welcome overnight guests and occasional workshops, but, as we don’t have a sheltered structure that is large enough for groups, this really limits the way we can support the development of the community that has been growing over the years around Mayavadi Organic Farm.

We dream of being able to host courses for people to learn how to implement sustainable farming practices, for independent artists to perform, for sharing seeds, recipes, tools, knowledge, techniques, for reconnecting to our ancient heritage through yoga, dance, pooja.

Of course, we want to make this structure 100 % ecologically sound: we will work only with ecological materials that are accessible in Karnataka. As you might already know, cement has a very high environmental price, so its role in our design will be minimal. It will be 50x25 square feet and we are using stone, cob, lime and natural oxide pigments. The design of the structure is still in progress, but we'll update and post the plan as soon as it is finished!

As well, we highly value the participation of the people from surrounding villages, in order for positive chance to first impact local community and economy. The making of this project will generate ethical jobs for locals. We also commit to allow free participation to any of our programs for any local wishing to join.

The last decades have been massively taking us away from our ancestral farming and living practices, every time integrating more toxic elements as the new normal. Therefore, we want to introduce useful information and training for the people of India and abroad.

Our budget

Material : 2 20 000 Rs.
(Stone beams, stones for foundations, transport)

Skilled labor, unskilled labor, volunteer expenses: 130 000 Rs.

Roof material and labor: 80 000 Rs.

Oxide flooring and important details: 70 000 Rs.

Estimated total: 500 000 Rs.

These are estimated costs if, hopefully, everything goes as planned. Any income we earn from our continuous overnight stay offer will also contribute to funding this project.
